Plans approved for revolutionary new dental centre

Plans to open a new 4.7 million pound dental centre in Stornoway have been approved. Planning permission has recently been granted and building will commence next month.

The centre, which has been labelled a ‘teach and treat’ facility, will provide excellent teaching facilities as well as state of the art treatment rooms. The educational side of the centre will benefit a number of universities and colleges and will be run by NHS education Scotland.

The new site is being developed in the ground of the Western Isles Hospital and will provide exceptional care for patients in the immediate local area, as well as those from the islands of Lewis and Harris. Chief executive of the hospital, Gordon Jamieson, is excited at the prospect of being able to deliver the best possible care to the island residents.

The facility will be revolutionary, with half of the new suites dedicated to education and training; the centre will help students from Aberdeen University and those from the University for the Highlands and Islands. The new centre will consist of seven new dental facilities as well as five, state of the art training surgeries.

The opening of Stornoway’s new dental centre is welcome news to Scottish people, as current NHS provision falls short of NHS targets in many areas. Scotland is one of the worst affected areas in terms of waiting lists; the new facility will help to ease waiting lists, improve standards of oral health care and encourage employment in the sector in more rural areas by offering graduates the best training facilities and postgraduate opportunities. The dental centre is set to open next year.
