New programme to promote oral health in local schools

Schoolchildren in the area of Beloit are set to benefit from a new programme, which will aim to promote good oral health.

The ‘Seal-a-Smile’ programme will run from September at schools across the district. The new scheme is being funded by the Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Public Health and is a joint venture between Community Health Systems and the School District of Beloit.

The scheme will enable around 825 children access to dental care; the programme will provide children with routine check-ups twice a year, as well as sealant and fluoride varnish treatments.

The preventative treatments will help to strengthen and protect the teeth, making them more resistant to decay and gum disease. The programme will also educate children about looking after their teeth, visiting their dentist and eating a healthy diet. It is hoped that investing money in oral health now will help to reduce costs later on, as fewer people will require complex dental treatment.
