A female driver has been pulled over by the police because she was flossing her teeth whilst driving at 70 miles per hour on the motorway.
The driver, who is 36 years old, was spotted by Gwent Police driving on the M4 motorway near Newport; traffic police in the area had been conducting an eight day clampdown on driving offences and were shocked to see the woman paying more attention to her teeth than the road ahead.
Officers involved in the incident said it was a bizarre occurrence but part of a worrying trend that is taking place right across the UK; increasingly, people are taking their eyes off the road to make sure they look good. A number of women are caught by police putting on make-up or sorting out their hair, while some officers have reported pulling men over for shaving whilst driving.
Whilst it is obviously important to maintain a high standard of oral hygiene, this should not impinge upon driving safety; police have urged motorists to recognise the importance of paying full attention to the road ahead of them at all times; an accident on a busy motorway at speeds of 70 mph could potentially be very dangerous.
The woman involved in this incident received a stern telling-off from police, as well as a £60 fine.
