A family dental practice in Florida has announced that it will hold a free clinic for underprivileged children in the area.
Millhopper Family Dentistry has teamed up with Dentistry from the Heart to offer children free dental treatment. The clinic is aimed at children without insurance and those from low income families; the appointments will be given on a first come, first served basis and the first one hundred children will be treated.
Dental decay is becoming increasingly common amongst young children, especially those who do not have dental insurance. Dental treatment can be very expensive and children are constantly surrounded by tempting sweet treats and convenience foods, which are often high in sugar and contribute to decay and gum disease. Free clinics are often the only source of help for children from low income families but the demand far outweighs the supply and many go without the treatment they need.
Treatments on offer include cleaning treatments, routine examinations, extractions and fillings. Staff at the surgery will be joined by eight volunteer dentists from other practices to ensure all the children with appointments can be treated. Dentistry from the Heart is working tirelessly to provide poorer children with access to dental care; since it started helping out nine years ago, it has helped more than 25,000 patients and provided more than 5.5 million dollars worth of treatment.
