An environmental campaigner has taken his case to court in Australia.
Al Oshlack is campaigning against the fluoridation of water supplies in the Rous area and has now taken his case to court. Mr Oshlack has filed his case at the Land and Environment Court and is now hoping to get plans for five fluoridation plants rebuffed.
Mr Oshlack claims that he is speaking on behalf of the majority of local residents; the veteran campaigner said that the community has not been asked about the plans for new plants and stressed that most people in the area do not want fluoride added to their water supply.
Research in the area has discovered that standards of oral health are poor; however, Mr Oshlack says that adding fluoride to the water is now the solution. Instead, Mr Oshlack wants to see more education and more resources, including a mobile dental unit, in the area; he also says that supermarkets should be more responsible and should stop targeting young people by putting junk food and sweets and chocolates by the cash tills.
