Mini Implants
If you've lost a tooth whether through damage or trauma and require a replacement then dental implants could be just the thing for you. Traditionally, the most popular way to replace a missing tooth was through the use of a removable denture or dental bridge. Dental bridges work by having crowned teeth on either side supporting a false tooth but haven been overtaken in popularity by the recent innovations in dental implant technology. There's a number of problems in using dentures or bridges such as slipping or causing odd clicking noises when speaking or eating. Dental bridges can also have an adverse effect on the surrounding teeth and repeated use of dentures has been shown to cause bone loss in the immediate area. Due to the number of problems associated with these methods, bridges and dentures don't have a long life span and need to be replaced at regular intervals. Fortunately, dental implants are better than ever due to innovations such as mini implants.
Mini implants are made up of a tiny titanium implant which is designed to mimic the root of your tooth and an O-ring which is put into the base of your denture. This serves to make sure your denture has increased stability and prevents it from falling out at the wrong moment. The implant is flexible to allow allow small movements in the denture, however, it won't fall out unless you choose to remove it. Mini implants have several uses including single-tooth replacements or as alternatives to crowns or bridges. By far the most popular use for a mini implants is to improve the security of your lower dentures. Many denture wearers suffer from loose teeth which can cause a great deal of discomfort and is all down to dentures which don't fit well.
The procedure
Mini dental implants are usually fixed under a local anaesthetic, meaning you'll be conscious throughout the procedure. The implants themselves are placed around five millimeters apart and the dentures are adjusted until they correctly fix onto the implants. This results in a great fitting denture which is 100% reliable, allowing the patient to eat, speak and socialise without fear of an embarrassing denture problem. The procedure takes around an hour and because the procedure is so simple and effective, many patients can eat light meals the same day.
An added benefit is that most types of mini dental implant are completely removable and all patients, with a little practice, should easily be able to remove and care for their denture. Mini dental implants are created from titanium, this makes them very strong and reacts well to human bone. In some rare cases however the dentures may fracture under the extreme forces of chewing.
