CEREC

CEREC (which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology is a recent innovation in dental restoration. CEREC dentistry creates a 3D map of your teeth by using advanced imaging techniques. This map can then be used to design veneers, inlays or crowns custom made for you. One of the main benefits of CEREC technology is that the entire procedure, from the mapping to the creation and actual fitting of the ceramics can usually be completed in one visit.

How is the procedure performed?

CEREC dentistry makes use of cutting edge computer mapping in order to make a complex 3D map of the desired tooth. During this part of the procedure your tooth will first be covered in white powder to aid the clarity of the mapping process and make sure the digital image is accurate. As opposed to traditional methods, your dentist won't need to make a mould of the desired tooth and instead the 3D image will be used to help design and create your crown or veneer. Once your dentist has finished the design process, an on-site machine uses the design to craft a new restoration from a ceramic block. Depending on what type of machine is used and the complexity of the work required, this 'milling' procedure can take anywhere between 6 and 30 minutes. Your ceramic restoration will also be appropriately coloured in order to blend in with the surrounding teeth. Finally your new restoration is glazed or polished and your dentist will prepare to fit it. Your dentist will prepare your teeth in much the same way as fitting a standard veneer or crown and will then cement the restoration into place. The CEREC process is much quicker than traditional methods as it doesn't require you to make repeated visits to your dentist. Similarly, it is also alot less invasive than conventional fitting techniques, meaning your dentist can preserve a much greater amount of your original tooth. Due to the ease of the process you won't need to wear any temporary veneers or crowns and the high quality of materials used in your new restoration will ensure they are resistant to damage or cracking. As the replacement tooth is made by your dentist there and then it can be customised in exactly the right way for you ensuring comfort and great aesthetics.

The Drawbacks

Unfortunately, there are some medical conditions and other circumstances which may make CEREC unsuitable as a treatment option for some patients. However for the vast majority of patients this won't be an issue. It's usual to discuss treatment options with your dentist before undergoing any dental work.
