Are there any side-effects to teeth whitening?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
Are there any side-effects to teeth whitening, such as more sensitive teeth, or is this just myth. Teeth whitening really appeals to me, having already gone to the effort of getting my teeth straightened I would love to improve their appearrance more. Is there one type of whitening system which is less likely to cause any problems?
A.
Teeth whitening can create some sensitivity in some patients.  Sensitiviy is usually more prevelant in patients who have recession of their gum tissue and areas of untreated decay.

Most whitening systems offer different concentrations of bleaching gel which accomodate sensitivity issues.

What are good home teeth whitening kits?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
I do not have the money to spend on proper teeth whitening. What cheap alternatives are there to going to the dentist to get it done?
A.
There are many over the counter whitening products you could try. Other than whitening tooth paste, which doesn’t work well, other products do work to some degree. They are still less predictable than traditional whitening under the supervision of a dentist.

Do tooth whitening toothpastes give significant results?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
Q.
Do you know of a particular toothpaste or other tooth cleaning product which will help with stained teeth? I dont have the money available for teeth whitening but my teeth seem to have turned a nasty shade of yellow which is no doubt to me smoking regularly. i have cut down now but i guess it is too late.
A.

The action of toothpastes to impart a significant difference in the whitening of teeth is fairly limited.  Whitening through bleaching is your best bet especially if most of the staining is from smoking.

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011
Q.
Do you know a good tooth whitening toothpaste on the market that will do a good job? I don’t have the money to get anything proper so will have to settle for this.
A.
All tooth whitening toothpaste are similar and many are abrasive. I would recommend some of the whitening strips instead.

What is the deal with free teeth whitening as part of other treatment?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011
Q.
From looking about i have noticed that several dentist seem to offer teeth whitening treatment as part of other treatments. why is this? i thought teeth whitening was supposed to be a relatively expensive treatment so how are dentists able to offer it free with other treatments. also, i just want to get it done the one time and dont want follow ups or to have to do it at home so which one would you say on that basis is best for me please drs.
A.

All in office whitening systems are similar with similar results. Whitening however can be unpredictable. You can have your teeth whitened one time but that may not be enough to achieve the best result. Also, without follow up of some kind the whitening effect will diminish over time which is why we recommend follow up. The choice is up to you.

I have broken teeth but want to get them whitened, what do you suggest?

Friday, February 25th, 2011
Q.
My teeth are very badly stained but they also contain a lot of chips and some of my teeth are broken at the back. I really want them whitened more than anything because you can’t see the chips/broken teeth cos they’re at the back, can ihave them whitened in this condition? can’t really afford to have them fixed properly just yet you see.
A.
I understand your desire to have white teeth but healthy teeth, especially back teeth are more important than white teeth. If you have cavities or broken teeth you may not be a candidate for whitening. Consult with a dentist on the health of your teeth and if whitening is possible with your situation.

My teeth are badly stained and teeth whitening hasn’t worked, what else can I do?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.
hello my teeth are very badly stained from the excessive nicotine and caffeine that i’ve consumed over the years. I have drastically cut back on both of these products now but my teeth are a horrible yellow colour. I have tried teeth whitening, professionally and done at home and it hasn’t worked, is there ANYTHING else I can try? I need to get rid of this staining, it’s ruining my life. Thank you for your time.
A.
Your most predictable and permanent method of treatment would be to veneer your teeth.  Although this is a bit more involved and expensive it provides permanent results and a much improved smile.

Can you buy a good tooth whitening toothpaste?

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011
Q.
Can you buy a good whitening tooth paste that doesn’t cost a fortune from your dentist? My teeth are pretty dull looking so I don’t really need to pay for the professional whitening, thanks!
A.
Most of the whitening toothpastes available are not very effective in whitening teeth.  You can try any of the toothpastes available and see if they work for you.  Dr. Lemongello

I would like a full mouth reconstruction, what is the first step I have to take?

Monday, February 21st, 2011
Q.
Hi, I am in dire need of a full mouth reconstruction. Over the years, I’ll admit I haven’t looked at me teeth as good as I should have and the majority of fallen out, as a result of this my mouth now appears to be fallen to one side. My front teeth have decayed badly and my gums bleed a lot. I know I should get this looked at but I can’t afford dental care and I have a major phobia of the dentist. What do you recommend I do? Thank you Dr.
A.
Dentistry has changed in many positive ways.  You are going to have to contain your fear and seek the help of a dentist.  Many dentists are trained in conscious sedation to reduce your fear and anxiety. Unfortunately, extensive dental treatment can be costly.  Start by consulting with a qualified dentist who specializes in complex dentistry.  You can then discuss your options and cost of treatment. Financing may be necessary.  Dr. Lemongello
