Is there an age limit to teeth whitening?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
My 13 year old daughter has said that she wants to get her teeth whitened, but I have told her no. Her teeth are a little discoloured and have always been so. Do you think there is an age limit in which a person should not have their teeth whitened?
A.
Hi many thanks for your email, i would say 13 is slighly too young for tooth whitening. My advice would be to maybe see a hygienist first to try to remove the staining. The youngest person i have ever done whitening for is 16, and i feel this should be the lower limit. Hope this is helpful.

What can I do to treat my flurosis?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
My dentist has informed me that I may have a case of flurosis, but that he will need to have a further look on my next appointment. Could you please tell me exactly what this is and how I can prevent it? My dentist did not seem too worried by it.
A.

Fluorosis is a benign condition where too much fluoride has been taken up into the tooth during its development and the enamel of the tooth is affected. There is no way for you to prevent it once the teeth have formed. It usually results in discoloration of the tooth. Other than a cosmetic issue it is not a problem.

What options are there to improve the colour of a dental crown?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011
Q.
I have a crown at the side of my upper teeth. It’s colour is now quite discoloured compared to my real teeth. I would like to know what my options are to improve its colour. Will I have to get another crown or can the colour of it be improved?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. Unfortunately, you can not change the colour of a crown, so the only option to improve the colour would be to replace the crown.

Should I get my teeth whitened before dental implant procedure?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
I am going to need a dental implant, althought that is not what this is really about. I am quite a keen coffee and tea drinker, and I also smoke, all of which has worked to stain my teeth a tarnish their natural colour. I am now wanting to get my teeth whitened, but was wondering whether I should get this done before the dental implant procedure? Would you be able to advise me on this matter?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The ideal time to whiten your teeth is once the implant itself has been placed. There is usually a healing time of around 2-3 months before the final crown can go on the implant. During this healing time would be a perfect time to then have your teeth whitened. This is also to enable the dentist to chose the right colour for your new dental implant crown. Hope this is helpful.

Is laser teeth whitening the better option?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
Does laser teeth whitening offer better results in comparison to other common methods? Is it a still relatively new method of teeth whitening, or is it well tested and trusted now?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your enquiry. Laser tooth whitening is an effective way of whitening your teeth, however if it was to be compared to a home system such as enlighten the results are more predictably whiter with a home treatment system. The exciting area in my view is when you start with a laser system and follow the whitening up with a home system. In my experiance this gives you the best result.

How long do the affects of enlighten teeth whitening last?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
How long do the affects of enlighten teeth whitening last. Is it merely a couple of years before you would need to get it done again, or even less possibly?
A.
I am not familiar with “enlighten” teeth whitening. Most chair side whitening with trays administered by and under the supervision of a dentist is predictable. This type of whitening lasts 6 months to a year. The beauty of take home tray whitening is that whenever you want to touch up the whitening effect just wear your trays for a day or two and re-whiten your teeth. Laser whitening doesn’t last as long and is usually followed up with take home trays to help keep your teeth white.

Are teeth whitening home kits a good choice?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
Would you please be able to recommend me a good teeth whitening home kit? I want one that is actually proven to have results, rather than just wasting my money.
A.
I would say that any product that is prescribed by a dentist is going to get you favorable results. The products that can be bought over the counter are usually not strong enough to gain good results.

What is causing my son’s discoloured teeth?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
I have noticed that my son (aged 11) has quite discoloured teeth. I would go as far to say that they look dirty, even after they have been cleaned. I make sure that he cleans his teeth regularly and limit his intake of surag drinks and snacks, so am at a loss to find what is causing it. Would you be able to enlighten me?
A.
Hello,

It sounds as though the discoloration could be internal.  This often occurs  as a result of medications taken at some point during the formation of the permanent teeth.  This should be easily diagnosed by your dentist.
