Does teeth whitening at the dentist cause sensitivity?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Q. When I do my at home teeth whitening I experience quite a bit of tooth sensitivity and duly can not keep the trays in my mouth for too long. It feels like I am not getting the most fomr the treatment because of it. Can you tell me if the whitening treatments offered at the dentists are any easier on the teeth as I do want to keep my teeth at a good colour?

A. Sensitivity is common when using whitening materials.  Generally take home whitening products cause less sensitivity than the in office products used by the dentist.  I would recommend using the whitening products for no more than 10 minutes a day.  This should be sufficient to whiten your teeth and may help keep the sensitivity down.  Your dentist may also be able to give you some fluoride to add to your tray to help with sensitivity.  Dr. Lemongello

What treatment can I get for tooth that is loose and discoloured?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Q. Can you please tell me what treatment there is for a tooth that feels loose and is discoloured? Price ranges wqould also be welcomed.

A. The treatment and cost will be dictated by determining why the tooth is loose.  If there is bone loss around it, it may need to be extracted.  This would require a bridge or an implant to replace it.

What is the deal with free teeth whitening as part of other treatment?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Q. From looking about i have noticed that several dentist seem to offer teeth whitening treatment as part of other treatments. why is this? i thought teeth whitening was supposed to be a relatively expensive treatment so how are dentists able to offer it free with other treatments. also, i just want to get it done the one time and dont want follow ups or to have to do it at home so which one would you say on that basis is best for me please drs.

A.

All in office whitening systems are similar with similar results. Whitening however can be unpredictable. You can have your teeth whitened one time but that may not be enough to achieve the best result. Also, without follow up of some kind the whitening effect will diminish over time which is why we recommend follow up. The choice is up to you.

Which dentist teeth whitening system should I opt for?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Q. Hi Doc, I’m choosing between 2 dental clinics to get my teeth whitened. But both recommended me different methods. Can anyone advise on which I should choose? Many thanks! Clinic1: LED whitening or Laser whitening (LaserSmileTM system) website http://www.patongsmile-dental.com/teethwhitening.html Clinic2: Laser whitening (latest “DUAL” power for laser whitening, as this is the combination between the diode laser light at 470 nM wavelength, and a second source of light, an infrared Laser wavelength 784 nM. With this latest system, it’s faster and more effective than ordinary laser machines) website http://www.thaidentalcenter.com/

A. Their are basically two types of whitening, at home method and in office method.  The in office method is usually marketed as “laser or LED whitening”.  In office bleaching or whiteniing is accomplished in about 1-2 hours.  At home will take a couple of weeks.  Most of the marketing by companies is just that.  The light systems are all very similar and in the hands of a qualified doctor the results will be very similar.

What are the take home teeth whitening systems like?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Q. What are the teeth whitening systems like that you can get from the dentists to do at home, Are there checkups or anything so make sure things are going alright?

A. The systems are called “take home whitening”.  There are many different products available and your dentist will choose a sytem that is right for you.  Usually, once the sytem is given to you no check up appointments are necessary.  However, the dentist is available to monitor the changes and answer any questions you have providing feedback and guidance to achieve the best results.  Dr. Lemongello

Is dental bridge able to be whitened?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Q. I have a dental bridge but want to get my teeth whitened. Can dental bridge also be whitened through the treatment?

A. No unfortunatly,  it would make things alot easier.  You will most likely have to have your bridge replaced to match the bleached shade of your teeth.

What is the difference between the teeth whitening methods?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Q. I see that there is bleach teeth whitening and also laser teeth whitening. Could you tell me what the ain differences are between the two differing treatments in terms of the benefits and disadvantages please?

A. Laser whitening is a procedure done in the dental office requiring a certain type of system.  Bleaching through the home method is much simpler but takes alot longer to attain.

Are some people more prone to teeth staining?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Q. Are some people just more probne to teeth staining? I drink one cup of coffee a day and don’t smoke, yet my teeth seem to be gettiong quite discoloured, so much so I am considering teeth whitening? Am I just unlucky?

A. You would be a great candidate for bleaching.  Some people are just a bit more prone to discoloration due to how their teeth were formed.
