Can I have lingual braces if I have badly crooked teeth?

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Q. Hi, I have really crooked bottom teeth and they’re affecting my smile severely! do you think i’d be able to have lingual braces? can they fix badly crooked teeth or are they only available for mild cases? Thanks for your suggestions

A. Lingual braces may be an option.  They are not limited to mild cases but they are limited by how much your teeth overlap each other when you bite down.  Since lingual braces go on the back of your front teeth there may not be room.  If the appearance of traditional braces is a concern another alternative may be Invisalgn.  Consult with a dentist who is certified in Invisalign to discuss your options.  Dr. Lemongello

Is wearing inman aligner 14 hours a day long enough?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Q. Can you wear the inman for 14hrs a day and see any results? Obviously i would expect treatment time to be increased

A. I would not recommend this little amount of wear. You will effectively be moving your teeth back and forth in the same position with little progression.

What happens once invisalign treatment is complete?

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Q. Once treatment is complete for invisalign is that it, all finished? I understand there is the need to wear retainers, but I am concerned after reading that some dentists recommend you wear them ‘forever’. Is this true? Is the possibility of retention all that bad?

A. After any type of orthodontic treatment life time retention is needed. If you dont wear the retainers at night the teeth will shift. Wearing retainers at night, especially the invisalign type is not that difficult. Dr. Lemongello

Should wisdom teeth be removed if they affect teeth structure?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Q. If wisdom teeth come through and begin to mess with the straightness of other surrounding teeth then is it just best to get them removed? Or are they necessary to the functioning of the mouth?

A.

If wisdom teeth are causing a problem they should be removed. In most cases they are not necessary for function.

Can sucking a dummy affect teeth development? What age should you stop?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Q. My daughter, aged two, still sucks dummy. I am now getting her to stop. I just wanted to ask at what age a child should stop sucking a dummy? This can have a negative effect on teeth development, can it not?

A. Yes, sucking a dummy can alter the arch development and cause the teeth to come in more crooked.  I think that if you can stop her now you will be just in time.
