I would like a full mouth reconstruction, what is the first step I have to take?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Q. Hi, I am in dire need of a full mouth reconstruction. Over the years, I’ll admit I haven’t looked at me teeth as good as I should have and the majority of fallen out, as a result of this my mouth now appears to be fallen to one side. My front teeth have decayed badly and my gums bleed a lot. I know I should get this looked at but I can’t afford dental care and I have a major phobia of the dentist. What do you recommend I do? Thank you Dr.

A. Dentistry has changed in many positive ways.  You are going to have to contain your fear and seek the help of a dentist.  Many dentists are trained in conscious sedation to reduce your fear and anxiety. Unfortunately, extensive dental treatment can be costly.  Start by consulting with a qualified dentist who specializes in complex dentistry.  You can then discuss your options and cost of treatment. Financing may be necessary.  Dr. Lemongello

Will I lose bone after having 2 teeth extracted?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Q. i had 2 teeth extracted a few weeks ago (one of them was a bottom wisdom tooth) anyway my bottom jaw (where i had them removed) is very swollen and painful after these weeks, the sockets are bleeding and i’m due to see my dentist tomorrow but just wondered if it may be infected? If this is the case what can be done? i’m worried that i’m going to lose bone.

A. You should not lose bone.  The dentist you will be seeing likely will treat this with a medication that will resolve your problem.

7 of my CEREC crowns have failed, what do I do now?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Q. Hi, I have nine Cerec Crowns, and seven of them have failed. The Cerec Crowns that fell out had metal in them. Is this typical of Cerec? Also four of the Seven teeth had to be extracted. Can these extractions affect my other teeth? I asked because I had a Gold Crown that was fine until two teeth were removed on the opposite side. Now the gumline is coming away from this Gold Crown and a infection has occured. The loss of these teeth have affected me greatly. Have you ever heard of this type of failure rate on Cerec Crowns now or in the past? The Dentist that placed these Cerec Crowns was just learning how to use the machine. I am so concerned about my teeth and just need honest answers. Thank you,

A. Cerec crowns have a high success rate if performed properly and cemented with the appropriate techniques.  Cerec crowns do not contain metal so either Cerec crowns were not done or you have inadvertently mixed up which crowns were Cerec and which were traditional crowns with gold base. Tooth loss will not affect your other teeth directly but can affect your bite and cause additional stress to your existing teeth accelerating problems with them.  Any gum infection needs to be treated immediately.  I would make the dentist who originally treated you aware of the situation but you may elect to see another dentist for treatment.  Dr. Lemongello

Can you have your wisdom teeth straightened?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Q. Hello, my wisdom teeth are currently coming through but I can see that they’re growing incorrectly and it looks like they’re going to cut into my gums and push my other teeth are there any ways i can get them straightened up asap?

A. There is no treatment to straighten wisdom teeth.  If they are problematic the treatment is to remove them. Dr. Lemongello

Do you know of a cure for dry mouth and burning tongue?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Q. HI – Do you know if there is such a thing as a REAL CURE for dry mouth, burning tongue and roof of mouth? I tested negative for Sjogren’s, Diabetes, yeast infection, thrush, you name it. My GP says it is NOT from my meds, (I don’t believe them) sent me to ear/nose/throat doctor. After test results, he gave up, said he didn’t know what was wrong with my mouth, and that there was no need to return to him. Told me to go look up burning tongue on internet and see what others did for it. I tried Burnical herbal supposed CURE from Finland for 45 days, saw just a little difference. I find little very relief from Biotene mouthwash, use it all day long. Also chew lots of gum, constantly drink water. Never had chemo or radiation. I take BP meds, 1 diuretic for BP, & celebrex. There is another herbal from Australia for burning mouth I was thinking of trying (90 days). My dentist was no help. I want it to go away permanently. My mouth is not dry ALL the time, but sometimes my tongue sticks to roof of mouth, drives me crazy. Tip of tongue burns most of time. Any suggestions? Know anything about this ailment? If you can’t help, know anyone who might? Thanks a bunch.

A. I am sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation.  I know that burning tongue and dry mouth syndrome are real problems. These are complex issues with multiple unknown etiologies that are still not understood.  I do not know enough about these issues to offer any specific advice.  I would recommend you continue your search but cannot offer much help.  Dr. Lemongello

I have extremely sensitive teeth, what can I do to ease the pain?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. I have very sensitive teeth and have tried everything to get rid of it. I’ve tried toothpaste and dental treatments and nothing seems to be working, my dentist has appeared to have run out of ideas. What can I use? Can you please help me because my teeth are constantly in pain, thank you.

A. There is currently a product called “D/Sense 2″ which has been very effective in diminishing tooth sensitivity when it is related to gumline recession.  If  the sensitivity is due to other reasons such as decay or deep restortations or fillings then it is possible that root canal treatment may be necessary.

I have just recovered from throat cancer and my teeth are ruined, what can I do?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. I’ve just recovered from throat cancer. The cancer has absolutely ruined my teeth, every single one has decayed and some have even fallen out. What do you think would be the best option for me in regards to my teeth? A full mouth makeover perhaps? If this is the case how much should I expect to pay? thank you, Brian.

A. I am sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation.  I would consult with both an oral surgeon to discuss removing your teeth and with a dentist to discuss option to restore your teeth to health.  Cost will vary greatly based on the options available.  Dr. Lemongello

I have periodontal disease, what can I do if all of my teeth fall out?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. I have just been diagnosed with periodontal disease and have been told that my teeth may fall out. I’m really worried about this and currently seeing a hygienist. If my teeth were to fall out what would my options be? I would like something to replace the missing teeth as soon as possible. Thank you for your time.

A. I recommend you focus on trying to save your teeth by treating the disease. You may wish to consult with a Periodontist (gum specialist) to review your treatment options. There are many options available so you will not go without teeth. Once the disease is under control you can discuss the next step with your dentist. Dr. Lemongello
