Advice conerning oral cancer?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
I have just got the horrible news that my mum has oral cancer. She is going to need to undergo surgery to try and beat it. Would you please be able to offer some advice on how I can help her through this, and what the surgery may involve?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, firstly i am sorry to hear the news about your mother. secondly if the cancer has been found early there is a good chance the surgery will be minor and the level of chemo and radiotherapy will be very sucessful. the surgery will involve removing the cancerious tissue. this can be bone but also teeth, so reconstuction of teeth and bone may be required. my advice will be to try to attend the appointments with your mum so you can also discuss any questions you and your mother may have with the surgeons.

I have very sensitive teeth and they are painful, what can I do about this?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011
Q.
i have two very sensitive teeth on bottom teeth next to each other and this is making eating very difficult for me as it can be so pauinful. could you tell of me any treatment that can possibly help me with this problem?
A.
It would depend on the condition of the teeth.  Sometimes it is simple to place a medication on the tooth that will greatly diminish the degree of sensitivity.  Sometimes it will require more involved treatment such as root canal treatment or coverage of the tooth/teeth with a crown or veneer.

What treatment can help restore the enamel on my teeth?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011
Q.
all enamel has gone from my teeth and they are in great pain because of the sensitivity. they are very thin as well becuase of this. what dental treatment can help me?
A.
Best treatment is usually to get them covered in some way.  Loss of enamel typically will result in a hypersensitivity……get this looked at.

Can I have my teeth whitened if I have a cracked tooth?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011
Q.
One of my two big front teeth is cracked due to an accident around a year ago .There was no pain so I have not had it treated but I have noticed that my teeth have been getting discolored over time. What I want to know is whether it would be opkay to get teeth whitening even though one of my teeth is cracked? Would this have any negative effect on it?
A.
If your teeth are darkening since your accident it is possible that the nerve of the teeth is dying….this often causes a discolorizatiation.  It would be important for this to be evaluated by your dentist before you decide to whiten your teeth.

Do you have any idea why my teeth are decaying?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.
Hello, i have had a white coloured substance on my tongue now for some time, it doesn’t bother me but since having it i’ve had really bad breath and my back teeth are decaying. I’m due to see my dentist but do you have any idea what this could be and why it’s happening?? thank you
A.

It could be something as simple as trauma caused from rubbing against the decayed teeth.  Decayed teeth can be a source of bad breath.  Have your dentist examine this.  See your dentist as soon as possible.  Dr. Lemongello

What treatment is available for a cracked tooth?

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Q.
Hi, I cracked my front tooth last week. It hurt at the time but the pain has faded. I wanted to get it sorted as soon as possible but have been too busy with work and the kids. I am a single parent. I would like to know what kind of treatment is available for a cracked tooth? Thanks.

A.
Sometimes a broken tooth can be repaired with a white tooth colored filling materail called composite.  Other times it may require a porcelain veneer or even a porcelain crown if much of the tooth is broken away. In the most severe case, you may require a root canal and a post if the nerve of the tooth is involved.

Upper bridge does not touch bottom teeth. What should I do?

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Q.
I had to have a bridge replaced recently. The new bridge is too low and I have a space of about 2 and a half teeth where my new, upper bridge isn’t touching my bottom teeth. My dentist says it will self adjust. But it’s been over 2 months and it doesn’t appear to ba adjusting at all. I’m wondering if it will eventually readjust, and if not, what my options are. Thank you

A.
I think you should discuss this with your dentist. If your teeth are not touching on that side of your mouth you may not be able to function properly and this should be evaluated.

Do any dentists offer free treatment for patients in need?

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Q.
Do you or any one you know help those who are in need of treatment, but can not pay for services?

A.

We wish we could help all those in need. There are so many deserving people who need care but there is only so much we can do. That is why we are members of the charitable foundation of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Give Back a Smile foundation. It is through the foundation that we restore the smiles and lives of victims of domestic violence. If this is your situation or the situation of someone you know you can contact the Academy. If not my suggestion is to seek treatment at a State run facility such as a local Dental School. The dental services are not free but are provided at a significantly lower fee due to a teaching environment.
