Q. i had 2 teeth extracted a few weeks ago (one of them was a bottom wisdom tooth) anyway my bottom jaw (where i had them removed) is very swollen and painful after these weeks, the sockets are bleeding and i’m due to see my dentist tomorrow but just wondered if it may be infected? If this is the case what can be done? i’m worried that i’m going to lose bone.
A. You should not lose bone. The dentist you will be seeing likely will treat this with a medication that will resolve your problem.

Q. Hello, is there such treatment available that can actually remove excess gums through surgery? You can’t see my teeth that great because I have such large gums! Any advice would be excellent, thank you.

Q. I was given a mouth guard to stop my grinding habits a few months ago and I’ve just finished my brace treatment but was told i need to pay for the retainer. Can my mouth guard act as a retainer for now? I was using invisalign and the retainers are pretty expensive and weren’t included within my treatment.

Q. Hi, I have nine Cerec Crowns, and seven of them have failed. The Cerec Crowns that fell out had metal in them. Is this typical of Cerec? Also four of the Seven teeth had to be extracted. Can these extractions affect my other teeth? I asked because I had a Gold Crown that was fine until two teeth were removed on the opposite side. Now the gumline is coming away from this Gold Crown and a infection has occured. The loss of these teeth have affected me greatly. Have you ever heard of this type of failure rate on Cerec Crowns now or in the past? The Dentist that placed these Cerec Crowns was just learning how to use the machine. I am so concerned about my teeth and just need honest answers. Thank you,
A. Cerec crowns have a high success rate if performed properly and cemented with the appropriate techniques. Cerec crowns do not contain metal so either Cerec crowns were not done or you have inadvertently mixed up which crowns were Cerec and which were traditional crowns with gold base. Tooth loss will not affect your other teeth directly but can affect your bite and cause additional stress to your existing teeth accelerating problems with them. Any gum infection needs to be treated immediately. I would make the dentist who originally treated you aware of the situation but you may elect to see another dentist for treatment. Dr. Lemongello

Q. Hello, my teeth are okay but i want dental work done for cosmetic reasons. The thing is my font four teeth protrude more than the rest of my teeth so the rest sit back quite a bit so when I smile you see the first front teeth then a lot of gums, i hate it! Would I need an orthodontic procedure OR something like veneers? Thank you for taking the time out to read this.
A. It is possible through both means. The more immediate impact would be with veneers. Orthodontic treatiment would take longer. Cost would likely be greater with veneers.

Q. I’m currently using the invisalign system and I’m not sure if it’s really working. I’m on trays 14/20 and my teeth appear to have not moved or look any different! My orthodontist said the treatment is going fine but I’m not convinced I’ve asked to see x-rays but she is refusing! Is this right? I’m really concerned.

Q. Is this method appropriate for children (girl age 9)? Can it be used to avoid using headgear for a severe overbite? Thank you.
A. The earlier you initiate treatment the better it is. I would consult with a certified Orthodontic specialist to determine what is the best course of treatment. Q. Hi I’ve heard that there are different types of dental veneers available, like da vinci veneers and lumineers etc which ones are the best? My teeth are quite chipped and the enamel on my teeth is very worn. What do you think would be best for me? My dentist is insisting that i pick but i don’t know. Thanks
A. The technique and type of material used for veneers is dependent on many factors. There is no one best material or one best technique for all situations. Your dentist should evaluate the situation and recommend what technique and material is best for you. I wouldn’t expect my patient to make that decision. Perhaps another dentist will help. Q. I’m currently under a hygienist for gingivitis and it’s taking forever to treat, is there anything I can use to speed up the healing process? Also, i’m looking into getting dental veneers once the gum disease has gone, would this be okay after having gum disease?
A. It takes a period 8-12 weeks for total healing of the gum tissue after treatment. It is important that you do what you are supposed to with your home care…if not the gingivitis will remain. Veneers are fine to have done as long as you continue your proper home care.
