Q.
After years of poor dental hygiene my teeth are no longer in a good condition, what with chips and cracks on my teeth, and a bad level of decay. My dentist has now informed me that I will need to get dentures, but I am not particularly keen on this. Are there any other treatment options, or will my teeth just continue to get worse if I don’t get dentures?

Hi, many thanks for your email. Until i can assess your mouth myself it is difficult to say whether this is the right treatment for you. If a denture is your only option then you could opt for implants instead, which would be a fixed alternative.

While playing rugby I managed to hurt and damage one of my front teeth. The dentist has told me that I will need to have it removed and get an implant. Would you please be able to give me an estimate of how much this would all cost. Thank you in advance.

I am going to need a dental implant, althought that is not what this is really about. I am quite a keen coffee and tea drinker, and I also smoke, all of which has worked to stain my teeth a tarnish their natural colour. I am now wanting to get my teeth whitened, but was wondering whether I should get this done before the dental implant procedure? Would you be able to advise me on this matter?

Hi, many thanks for your email. The ideal time to whiten your teeth is once the implant itself has been placed. There is usually a healing time of around 2-3 months before the final crown can go on the implant. During this healing time would be a perfect time to then have your teeth whitened. This is also to enable the dentist to chose the right colour for your new dental implant crown. Hope this is helpful.

Is bone grafting a safe option when it comes to dental implants? It sounds like quite a dangerous method to get the necessary amount of bone. Are there any alternatives, or are these not as good?

hi many thanks for your email, the grafting material is dependant on the site to be grafted and the size of the graft needed. if the size of the graft is large then my advice would be to use your own bone as this will integrate far better than artificial graft material. if the size of the graft needed is small you could use artificial bone mixed with your own bone to graft the site which research has shown is just as good. it is all dependant on the site and the comfort zone of the surgeon. a common artificial graft material is bio-oss it is derived from bovine bone.

I have read that patients are able to use the bone of a cow or some other simialr animal if they are unable to undergo bone grafting. This sounds kind of twisted to me. Is there any truth to it?

The best person to ask this question to would be an implantologist.  Bone grafting is commonly done.  Most often it is an autogenous graft meaning that bone is taken from another part of your body and transfered or grafted to the area in need.

How much would it cost to get one single dental implant for a tooth at the top side of the mouth. First molar I think after looking on the internet. What attachments is it possible to get and how much woudl these cost? Would they need to be replaced after some time?

Fees vary greatly depending on where you are demographically around the country. If performed by a quailed specialist, not someone advertising the lowest fee on TV or in the newspaper, you can expect to pay approximately $1800 – $2000 for the surgery. Depending on the implant type and the additional parts required to create the crown for the implant you can expect to pay at least the same amount for the crown, and likely more. Consult a Periodontist on the implant placement and let them recommend a general dentist to restore the tooth. You do not want to shop implants by price. You get what you pay for.

The advantages of a bridge are ease of placement and it may be a very good option especially if the teeth needed to hold the bridge also need to be restored. Life expectancy varies but should last a long time. The disadvantage is if the teeth needed to hold the bridge are healthy and do not need to be restore. In this case you are crowning them only to hold the bridge. You can always have the bridge changed in the future and add implants but there may not be a need once the bridge is placed and as long as it remains healthy.

Could you please tell me some of the advantages and disadvantages of the full mouth reconstruction procedure? I need it done because of a bad case of gum disease, but my teeth were not the best anyway. Could you also give me an estimate of what this may cost, and what it actually involves?

hi many thanks for your email, a full mouth reconstruction is used when the existing teeth are broken down, worn  or missing so that the occlusion(bite) is not ideal and the function of the mouth is not satisfactory.

Full mouth reconstructions can vary from £10,000 to £50,000 dependant on the time needed and how much work is necessary and if dental implant work is also needed. hope this is helpful.
