Does a cracked tooth heal itself? Or would straightening my teeth repair or prevent further damage?

Thursday, February 17th, 2011
Q.
my teeth are not completely straight.on the top row, 1 of my front teeth are sticking out. the bottom row has a tooth sticking out which is in same place as top tooth that is out. it’s not too bad on top yet, but has a crack that my dentist showed to me. does a crack heal by itself if allowed to heal? and how would I treat a cracked tooth? would straightening repair this or prevent further damage?
A.
Cracks do not heal they only continue to get worse.  Treatment can vary depending how bad the crack is and may include nothing but monitoring it or restoring it. Straightening will not repair this but could prevent further cracks.  Consult with your dentist on what is recommended.  Dr. Lemongello

There are cracks and chips on my teeth and the enamel is wearing away. Can anything be done?

Q.
there are cracks on my teeth and i have noticed that the enamel is wearing away. for my top teeth there is also a chip on one of them close to the front ones. can anything be done?
A.
You have many different options available to you depending on the extent of the cracks.  It may be as simple as no treatment.    If the cracks are bad enough some form of restoration like a veneer may be needed.  Visit our website at www.lernerlemongello.com for examples of what is possible.  Dr. Lemongello

What treatment is available for a cracked tooth?

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Q.
Hi, I cracked my front tooth last week. It hurt at the time but the pain has faded. I wanted to get it sorted as soon as possible but have been too busy with work and the kids. I am a single parent. I would like to know what kind of treatment is available for a cracked tooth? Thanks.

A.
Sometimes a broken tooth can be repaired with a white tooth colored filling materail called composite.  Other times it may require a porcelain veneer or even a porcelain crown if much of the tooth is broken away. In the most severe case, you may require a root canal and a post if the nerve of the tooth is involved.

Upper bridge does not touch bottom teeth. What should I do?

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Q.
I had to have a bridge replaced recently. The new bridge is too low and I have a space of about 2 and a half teeth where my new, upper bridge isn’t touching my bottom teeth. My dentist says it will self adjust. But it’s been over 2 months and it doesn’t appear to ba adjusting at all. I’m wondering if it will eventually readjust, and if not, what my options are. Thank you

A.
I think you should discuss this with your dentist. If your teeth are not touching on that side of your mouth you may not be able to function properly and this should be evaluated.
