Is there a dental floss for teeth which are tightly fitted together?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
My teeth are too tightly packed together for dental floss to work. Are there any special floss’ available on the market for such cases?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. There is dental floss which is like a piece of string or there are also dental tapes. Try both to see which will work best. The other thing to mention is it is unusual to not be able to floss as the teeth are too tight but you can if needed use interdental brushes to make sure the areas inbetween your teeth are cleaned throughly.

Hope this is helpful.

Why are there specks of blood when I clean my teeth?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
When I spit after brushing my teeth I have noticed that there are specks of blood. This is something I only started to notice last week, but is pretty constant now. I have tried to find where it is coming from but have been unable to do so. Could this be a sign of a real problem?
A.
Healthy teeth and gums do not bleed. If the bleeding is intermittent and your teeth and gums are healthy and checked regularly than I wouldn’t be too concerned but you should have it checked by a dentist.

My dental crown fell out – what should I do?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
Three days ago I got a dental crown, but, for some unexplained reason, the crown has fallen out. The earliest appointment I could get at the dentist is early monday, but what can I do in the mean time to make sure my remaining tooth is not getting damaged? Should I be more careful when brushing my teeth?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. It is unusual for a crown to fall out so early after it has been fitted. If the crown can go directly back onto the tooth, you can purchase some temporary cement from an pharmacy and tempoariily recement it. Alternatively, my advice would be to brush it softly and stick to a soft diet till monday.

How do you keep a child’s teeth healthy?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
I have great trouble in getting my twelve year old son to brush his teeth. He is a stubborn one. He puts effort into his clothes and hair but does not seem to realise that his teeth are even more important. Have you any advice to make sure a fussy teenager works to keep their teeth in good order?
A.
If I did I would be a millionaire! My advice is to give him an electric brush like Sonicare. At least this will help even during the short time he may be using it. After a while, when girls take notice of his teeth, he may change.

What effect will lumineers have on teeth?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
If you have lumineers placed, what happens to the teeth that they are placed on? Are they still able to stay healthy through normal teeth cleaning, or do special techniques need to be undertaken?
A.

The tooth underneath remains intact. Veneered teeth are maintained like natural teeth through normal oral hygiene and dental cleanings. There are no special techniques.

What is causing my son’s discoloured teeth?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
I have noticed that my son (aged 11) has quite discoloured teeth. I would go as far to say that they look dirty, even after they have been cleaned. I make sure that he cleans his teeth regularly and limit his intake of surag drinks and snacks, so am at a loss to find what is causing it. Would you be able to enlighten me?
A.
Hello,

It sounds as though the discoloration could be internal.  This often occurs  as a result of medications taken at some point during the formation of the permanent teeth.  This should be easily diagnosed by your dentist.

Are some people more susceptible to tooth decay?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
No matter how well I clean my teeth and limit my intake of sugar and acidic foods, I always seem to need some annoying dental treatment like a filling. Are some people more prone to problems with their teeth, or is there the possibility of an underlying condition? I don’t want to lose my teeth or ruin my smile.
A.
Every patient is different.  Some are more succeptable to decay than others.  This can be diet related or there can simply be a predisposition to decay as a result of  salivary flow and acidity and oral hygiene technique.

At what age should you start your child cleaning their teeth?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
At what age should you start your child cleaning their teeth?
A.
At home you should start cleaning their teeth a soon as they come in. Usually we recommend they start seeing a dentist around age 2 ½ to 3 years old unless you suspect a problem then any age is appropriate to make sure nothing is wrong.

What electric toothbrush would you recommend?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
I have always used a normal toothbrush to clean my teeth but am going to take the step after hearing nothing but good things and go for the electric toothbrushes. However, I don’t jhave a clue which is a good brand or anything. could you give me an idea of what kind of things I should look out for?
A.
The top brands I would recommend are any of the Sonicare brushes. Braun makes a number of good brushes as well. Dr. Lemongello
