What options are available when a veneer is chipped?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
My veneer has chipped and looks quite horrible. I have had for quite some time now, but it only started to feel vulnerable after treatment I had on a tooth next to it last month. Is my only choice to just get another veneer put in?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email, if your veneer has chipped then the best treatment option would be to have the veneer replaced. i hope this is helpful.

What treatment is available for a broken tooth?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
My three year old son has broken his tooth while playing on the swings at the ark. The tooth is chipped, but is not causing him any pain. What would advise me to do? Could this have any effect on his later adult teeth?
A.
If there is no pain or no involvement in the nerve of the tooth then I would choose to let it be.  He will loose this tooth naturally when he is about 7.  An x-ray  and exam would be indicated just to be sure that there is no underlying damage to the developing permanent tooth.

What treatment is available for a cracked tooth?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
I cracked my tooth when playing footballl on sunday. I fell over and collided with another players boot. Nice. Anyway, I am getting quite a bit of pain from it, but it has been ages since I went to the dentist. What kind of treatment is available for this kind of thing?
A.
There are many different treatments depending on the extent of the damage. I am sure no matter what your needs are there is a good solution. You will have to consult with a dentist to find out exactly what is needed in your case.

What treatment is there for a cracked tooth?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
My four year old daughter fell and cracked one of her front teeth. It now seems to be turning a blacky colour. Does this mean it is decaying or something? Will it affect the formation of her adult tooth in that position? What should I do?
A.
Not decaying. Most likely the pulp(nerve and blood supply) within the tooth has been damaged resulting in internal bleeding of the tooth. This results in a darkened color. It is wise to have this evaluated by exam and radiograph to determine if there is any damage to the underlying permanent tooth.

Should I get baby’s brokent tooth checked out?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
My child has broken one of her baby teeth. She was playing on the swing and took a nasty fall. She was upset to say the least. Since then it has caused her little pain, which is suprising, but I was wondering what could be done. It is a baby tooth so should fall out soon enough but is it still necessary to get sorted out?
A.
It is always wise to have traumatic injuries evaluated.  Sometimes it can be minimal concerns and other times major concerns.  As  for when it would naturally fall out is dependent upon what tooth it is and her age.

What treatment is available for a chipped tooth?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
Q.
I chipped my front tooth a week ago. There was little pain at the time but it has gradually got worse and it doesn’t look all that nice anyway. What treatment is available to fix this. Is there a chance I have gone down to the nerve and this is why it is hurting. When I eat or drink something it is quite painful.
A.
It is possible you have involved the nerve and why it may be hurting. Treatment options can range from bonding to placing a porcelain veneer or crown depending on how much is broken and what you want to accomplish. The pain will only get worse so consult a dentist as soon as possible.

What would be the best way to rectify the appearance of chipped tooth?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.
Hello doctor, hope you are well

I have recently chipped my front tooth, after a cycling accident and have had it checked out by my NHS dentist who is more than happy with the stability of the tooth, and doesn’t fear any infections etc
What would be the best way to rectify the appearance of this tooth? The tooth is chipped in the bottom left hand corner and has a slightly sharp edge. I have looked at veneers and cosmetic bonding which would you think is the best treatment for me and which is the most long lasting in your opinion?

thank you for your time

A.
Porcelain veneers and cosmetic bonding both have advantages and disadvantages. Cosmetic bonding is a good choice if a small amount of tooth needs to be replaced. The disadvantage is that it doesn’t last very long and may need to be replaced every 3-5 years. Porcelain veneers are stronger and will last longer but are more invasive and more expensive. I would consult with your dentiost to see which option is best for you . Dr. Lemongello

Will chipped tooth decay get any worse?

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011
Q.
Hi Dr Lerner * Lemonhello I managed tp chip one of my front teeth but it is not too bad. Noticeable but not too bad. What I would like to know is if I sould be worried that the tooth will decay or get any worse?
A.
Ultimately the tooths integrity is compromised but decay is unlikely.  If cracked the tooth could get worse.  I would recommend you have it evaluated by a dentist to make sure no treatment is needed.  Dr. Lemongello

If your tooth was damaged due to trauma in an accident I recommend you have it evaluated by your dentist. It could decay or break away more. The dentist will then determine if any treatment is needed. Dr. Lemongello
