Are braces the best answer to my decay problems?

Friday, December 16th, 2011
Q.
Hi Dr. Kirtley, my 4/5 and 12/13 teeth have a strange alignment where they are pointed in different directions which puts them sitting almost next to each other on the roof of my mouth. It doesn’t look too weird or anything but it makes cleaning between the teeth difficult and an unnoticed cavity between 4 and 5 broke my #4 tooth earlier this year. I had a root canal done on the tooth and a filling put in which was supposed to be temporary. Now I have a cavity on the opposite side developing. My dentist recommended pulling one of the two teeth and that I talk to an orthodontist about braces. I would like to avoid braces if possible, so does it seem logical to pull the inward teeth and not having to deal with braces, but have two teeth with fillings – or to pull the damaged outward teeth and use braces to slide the inward teeth into their correct places. Additionally, if I absolutely needed braces are lingual braces an option for this situation? I know it is difficult to diagnose without xrays and what not but I would just like a second opinion. Thanks so much for your time.
A.
You should always opt for braces to correct your alignment. Bad alignment can create all sorts of problems….decay, periodontal disease, tooth loss…

Can my 12 year old daughter have braces to straighten her ‘buck’ teeth?

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011
Q.
hi

My 12 year old daughter has buck teeth because of pacifier chewing and i just wanted to know what braces you would recommend. I just wanted to check also that she is old enough for braces, as I wouldn’t want to be doing any damage in my eagerness to straighten out her teeth.

thank you for your time and I hope you can be of assistance.

A.
Hello and thank you for getting in touch.
Orthodontic treatment including the likes of Invisalign or traditional braces would be a good option for your daughter’s condition. You would however first need to consult with a certified dentist to find out which is the best option for her situation.  Twelve years old is fine to get started on straightening teeth though in the most part. We often start even earlier to capture growth and development curves.Hope this helps and good luck. Hope all goes well. Dr. Lemongello

What is the best way to correct crossbite?

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011
Q.
hello doctors i wonder if you could help with my situation please
I currently suffer from a very severe crossbite, which is having a profound effect on my actual speaking, eating and overall self esteem. I would really like to get this sorted out with necessary treatment and soon, but i guess there may be different ways to correct this problem. could you therefore recommend the way in which you would correct it?

thank you for your time and all the best

A.
The choice of treatment would be based on how bad the crossbite is and whether there is a need to restore your teeth as well. My first choice, if your teeth are healthy would be orthodontic correction with braces. If your teeth are worn and require treatment a restorative option may be needed. Visit our website at www.lernerlemongello.com. You can review an article in the media section I published on correction of a crossbite with a restorative option. Dr. Lemongello

How do you fix protruding teeth?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
I am now into my late 20s and have a problem where my front teeth slightly protrude. Are braces able to fix this easily enough, or is another treatment a better option? Hope to hear from you soon.
A.
Braces are an option for most alignment issues. Treatment time can be lengthy and wearing braces can be uncomfortable. Porcelain veneers are also an option, and can be done in just a few appointments. A porcelain veneer is a thin porcelain covering on the face of the tooth that can change the shape, position and color of a tooth.

Is there an alternative to braces to fix my crooked front teeth?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
I have what I would consider as relatively good teeth, though I do have a problem with my two front teeth being slightly crooked. I would like to get this treated, but do not like the idea of braces. Would you be able to advise me on an effective yet cheap method to get this done?
A.

The teeth could be re-aligned by placing porcelain veneers on the face of the teeth. This is done by removing the portion of the tooth that is protruding and replacing the face of the tooth with a porcelain covering. You may need to treat more than just the two teeth to achieve balance in your smile design.

What treatment is available to fix gaps between front teeth?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
Can you please inform me of the treatment options available to close the gap between the two front teeth. This has been the vain of my existence for as long as I can remember and I am desperate to get it sorted.
A.
There are 3 main treatment options to close the gap between your teeth, depending on the situation. They are Orthodontics (braces or Invisalign), composite bonding or porcelain veneers. All have advantages and disadvantages, so investigate them all prior to your final choice. Dr. Lemongello

Are veneers or braces best for straight teeth?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
I have never been all that happy with my teeth. They are not all that straight and I hate the look of them. I am looking into braces and veneers. Veneers becuase it seems like a quick procedure, but I also feel that it would be nice to have my teeth being completely natural. Would you have an opinion on such a matter, or is it down to individual cases?
A.
The choice comes down to this: once straightened, are you going to like the appearance of your teeth?  Orthodontics can straighten alignment, but if the shape, size, or color of each individual tooth is not esthetically pleasing, you may still be unhappy with the appearance.  I would suggest that you find a dentist who can offer a cosmetic imaging simulation through Envision A Smile software that can show your face with a newly designed smile before treatment is started.  This will help you decide.

What happens once invisalign treatment is complete?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
Once treatment is complete for invisalign is that it, all finished? I understand there is the need to wear retainers, but I am concerned after reading that some dentists recommend you wear them ‘forever’. Is this true? Is the possibility of retention all that bad?
A.
After any type of orthodontic treatment life time retention is needed. If you dont wear the retainers at night the teeth will shift. Wearing retainers at night, especially the invisalign type is not that difficult. Dr. Lemongello

What treatment is available for a gummy smile?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
What treatment options are available for a gummy smile? I have already seen stuff about gum contouring but do not particularly like the idea of cutting into the gums. Are there any alternatives to this procedure, or should I just brave it and go for gum contouring?
A.

An alternative may be braces but it depends on the situation. The idea is worse than the treatment. Once it is completed you will be pleased with the improved appearance. Gum re-contouring can be very simple treatment with a Laser. Talk to your dentist.

What is the difference between invisalign and lingual braces?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
What is the difference between invisalign and lingual braces? Are they not both supposed to be practically invisible when wearing them?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, invisalign is a removable clear brace which works by using many aligners to move the teeth, each aligner is designed to move the teeth slightly, each aligner is worn for two weeks and then replaced with the next aligner in the sequence. the aligners look like a see through gum shield so when wearing the aligner its practically invisible.

lingual braces is a fixed metal brace, but instead of it being fixed to the front of the teeth(traditional method) it is attached to the back of the teeth(lingual surface) so they are practically invisable unless you look careful at the back of the teeth.

hope this clears that up.
