I have a bad ulcer on my tongue, is this a dental matter?

June 18th, 2010

Q. Hi, i have a large ulcer on my tongue, i think it’s an ulcer anyway. It’s seeping pus and i’m a bit concerned but is this a dental matter? Or is it a medical one? My gums are bleeding pretty bad also, i have no idea why! any help would be great!

A. This would be something you would want to have looked at right away.  Ulcerations can be treated.  However, you want to make sure it is something that is not more serious.

I have very swollen gums from my train track braces, why is this?

June 18th, 2010

Q. i’ve been wearing the classic train track braces for a while now and haven’t experienced any real problems until now. my breath smells so bad and i can’t seem to make it any better also my gums appear swollen, what should i do? i’m quite worried.

A. During Orthodontic treatment I recommend you see your dentist and receive professional cleanings at least 4 times a year. More if necessary. It sounds as if more attention needs to be made in keeping your teeth as clean as possible. Bring this situation to the attention of your dentist. Dr. Lemongello

June 18th, 2010

Q. Hi there, i chipped my teeth recently (both of my front teeth) it was in a skateboarding accident anyway they look okay but they’re really painful at the moment and turning a funny color i have a bit of a fear of the dentist so what do you think i should do??

A. See a dentist!!!!! you have likely traumatized them to the point that the nerve of the tooth has been affected.

What types of dental bridges are available?

June 18th, 2010

Q. Hi, i’m considering a dental bridge to replace 3 missing teeth for me it seems the best option. Just wondering if you could give me a description about the different types of bridge available? I’d like a professionals point of view rather than finding something off the internet that might not be entirely true, thanks.

A.

Bridges are made from 3 different types of materials. The choice is all gold, gold with porcelain over it and all porcelain.  Which material is used depends on the strength needed and the number of missing teeth to replace. Higher strength materials are used to replace back teeth and when more teeth are being replaced. Consult with your dentist on which choice is best for your situation. Dr. Lemongello

Normal that teeth feel loose following gum contouring?

June 15th, 2010

Q. Hello i had the gum contouring surgery a few weeks ago and it went fine but i’ve noticed that my teeth seem very loose now and i’m very concerned, i don’t want them to fall out. Is this normal? is it supposed to happen?

A. It would seem odd that your teeth would suddenly feel loose only after a contouring of your gum tissue.  It would be advisable to see your dentist to evaluate this.

Root canal is still bothering me. Should I go with dentist’s advice?

June 15th, 2010

Q. I have had a root canal on tooth number 3 in which it is still bothering me. My endodontist has suggested an Apicectomy. I read an article where this could be up to 80% unsuccessful. Is this true? Would you suggest I go ahead with it or just get it pulled?

A. I would recommend you do whatever is necessary in an attempt to save your tooth.  It is worth undergoing this procedure to save the tooth as long as you realize the tooth may still be lost in the future.  Dr. Lemongello

I had my teeth whitened but it’s fading already! Can I get my money back?

June 14th, 2010

Q. Hello i had my teeth professionally whitened by my dentist about a week ago and he used zoom! anyway he said it would last a while but it’s fading already! Can i get my money back or ask him to re-do it? I paid a fortune and my teeth are going back to their usual colour, i’m brushing them regularly and i’ve cut back on the strong foods. Did he not do it long enough or something?

A. I would request a touch up or have him give you an “at home bleaching kit” which will help you maintain the brightness of the smile

I had the gum contouring treatment and now my teeth feel loose, is this normal?

June 14th, 2010

Q. Hello. I recently had my gums contoured if that’s how you say it? Anyway my top row of teeth feel really loose and I feel the dentist has lasered off the gums too much! Should my teeth feel like this? They also feel VERY sensitive.

A. Sensitivity is often experienced after gum re-contouring and should subside over time.  Laser contouring only removes excess gum not bone so your teeth should not be any more loose than prior to the procedure.  Consult with your dentist. Dr. Lemongello

My recently fitted dental bridge feels very loose, what should I do?

June 14th, 2010

Q. I’ve just recently had a dental bridge placed to replace 3 missing teeth, it now feels really loose, like it’s just about to come out and I can’t eat anything solid for the fear that it will. Is it supposed to be this loose because it’s just been placed? Or should I go back to my dentist? Thanks

A. go back to your dentist!   It may need to be re-cemented or it could be one of the supporting teeth are compromised.

I’d like to know about CEREC, is it worth paying the amount of money for it?

June 14th, 2010

Q. Hi i just want to know a little about CEREC from a professional. I asked my dentist but he said he didn’t know! I’m considering having the crown treatment done under this technology, just wanted to know if it was worth paying the amount for it?

A. A CEREC crown is made of a strong all ceramic material that is computer milled from a solid block of porcelain of a single color.  As with all materials it has its strengths and weaknesses.  If it is to restore a molar tooth I prefer a traditional crown made of gold and porcelain, or a full gold crown which may have a longer life expectancy.  CEREC crowns may not be as esthetic as traditional crowns  unless the dentist is willing to take additional time to modify the color of the material to be more natural. This is because the block is one color unlike teeth which are a blend of colors.  Discuss your options with the dentist and decide which type of crown is best for your situation. CEREC crowns should be similar in cost to any other type of crown.  This should not be a limiting factor.  Dr. Lemongello
