Q. No matter how well I clean my teeth and limit my intake of sugar and acidic foods, I always seem to need some annoying dental treatment like a filling. Are some people more prone to problems with their teeth, or is there the possibility of an underlying condition? I don’t want to lose my teeth or ruin my smile.
A. Every patient is different. Some are more succeptable to decay than others. This can be diet related or there can simply be a predisposition to decay as a result of salivary flow and acidity and oral hygiene technique.

Q. My child has broken one of her baby teeth. She was playing on the swing and took a nasty fall. She was upset to say the least. Since then it has caused her little pain, which is suprising, but I was wondering what could be done. It is a baby tooth so should fall out soon enough but is it still necessary to get sorted out?
A. It is always wise to have traumatic injuries evaluated. Sometimes it can be minimal concerns and other times major concerns. As for when it would naturally fall out is dependent upon what tooth it is and her age.

Q. I do not have the money to spend on proper teeth whitening. What cheap alternatives are there to going to the dentist to get it done?
A. There are many over the counter whitening products you could try. Other than whitening tooth paste, which doesn’t work well, other products do work to some degree. They are still less predictable than traditional whitening under the supervision of a dentist.

Q. I had my wisdome tooth removed a few days ago. I have noticed that there is a small piece of tissue that is still connected to the area of extraction. I can feel it is loose with my tongue and see it in the mirror. It does not hurt, but should I get my dentist to check it out?
A. Yes, have it evaluated.

Q. One of my front teeth is a crown, but ever since getting it just under a year ago I have had a slight problem with bad breath. Nothing major but I thinkg it is noticeable. Is there anything I can do to stop it?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the only reason a crown would be giving you bad breathe is if the gum around the crown was not being adequately cleaned and you were not flossing around it. my advice would be to see you dentist and hygiensit and see what they say.
hope this is helpful.

Q. My four year old daughter fell and cracked one of her front teeth. It now seems to be turning a blacky colour. Does this mean it is decaying or something? Will it affect the formation of her adult tooth in that position? What should I do?
A. Not decaying. Most likely the pulp(nerve and blood supply) within the tooth has been damaged resulting in internal bleeding of the tooth. This results in a darkened color. It is wise to have this evaluated by exam and radiograph to determine if there is any damage to the underlying permanent tooth.

Q. When I smile my gum shows far too much, and covers up some of my front teeth. It really puts me off smiling and has even affected me having relationships. What treatment is there available for this?
A. Any form of gum re-contouring or gum lift procedure should provide a good solution for this. It may be as simple as using a laser to sculpt the tissue or may be more involved depending on how much tooth is still covered. Generally a Periodontist is the specialist of choice but discuss this with your dentist.

Q. I have read that patients are able to use the bone of a cow or some other simialr animal if they are unable to undergo bone grafting. This sounds kind of twisted to me. Is there any truth to it?
A. The best person to ask this question to would be an implantologist. Bone grafting is commonly done. Most often it is an autogenous graft meaning that bone is taken from another part of your body and transfered or grafted to the area in need.

Q. I have just got the horrible news that my mum has oral cancer. She is going to need to undergo surgery to try and beat it. Would you please be able to offer some advice on how I can help her through this, and what the surgery may involve?
A. hi many thanks for your email, firstly i am sorry to hear the news about your mother. secondly if the cancer has been found early there is a good chance the surgery will be minor and the level of chemo and radiotherapy will be very sucessful. the surgery will involve removing the cancerious tissue. this can be bone but also teeth, so reconstuction of teeth and bone may be required. my advice will be to try to attend the appointments with your mum so you can also discuss any questions you and your mother may have with the surgeons.
