Q. I would like to know whether or not dentists have the same confidential kind of law as do doctors? I mean being unable to tell others about the patient’s treatment and such.
A. Hi many thanks for your enquiry, yes dentists are governed by patient confidentialty. So a treatment that takes place between you and your dentist is strictly private information. Hope this is helpful.

Q. I have noticed signs of tooth decay for quite some time now. I have tried to take care of my teeth to a good standard but the decay has developed as far as I can see. The reason I have let it go on is because I could not afford it, but now I think I will be able to do so. I would just like to know what other problems may have developed after leaving it so long to be treated?
A. Hi many thanks for your email, if your tooth has dental decay, the only other problems that can occur if left untreated, the decay could have spread into the nerve of the tooth so the tooth would then need root canal treatment before it is then restored with a filling or crown.
Also, if the decay is spread so the filling is large the tooth may be better being crowned as apposed to just filled. hope this information is helpful.

Q. I was recently diagnosed with epliepsy, and am concerned that I may have an episode during treatment. Have you had any experience with epileptic patients and would you be able to offer me any advice?
A.
Advise your dentist about your seizers. If your seizers are in an active state I would avoid dental treatment. As long as you take your medication and your seizers are under control you should not be concerned.

Q. I get canker sores quite often, This is something my mother usually gets as well, so I suppose it must be genetic in some respects. Is there something I can do to try and stop this from ahppening? Is it to do with oral hygiene?
A.
It is still unknown exactly why some people are prone to Canker sores. It does not have to do with hygiene. It is suspected to be systemic in nature with certain factors contributing to their occurrence. Some of these things are trauma to the tissue and certain acidic foods in the diet such as citrus. Q. I just had a filling put in on my upper right teeth toward the back. I would just like to know the life span of fillings. Are they supposed to last quite a bit of time? Does this depend on the type of filling you receive?
A.
If a filling was all that was needed and it was performed in a conscientious manor than it should last many years. Dr. Lemongello

Q. Each morning I wake up I have this horrible dry mouth. This is really disgusting and has been bothering me for about two weeks now. Do many people get this? Is there anything I can do about it?
A.
Many people experience dry mouth. There are many causes such as mouth breathing due to sinus problems or as a resulting side effect from medication. You can discuss this with your dentist who may have advice for you specific needs. Stay hydrated as much as possible.

Q. Hi, I cracked my front tooth last week. It hurt at the time but the pain has faded. I wanted to get it sorted as soon as possible but have been too busy with work and the kids. I am a single parent. I would like to know what kind of treatment is available for a cracked tooth? Thanks.
A. Sometimes a broken tooth can be repaired with a white tooth colored filling materail called composite. Other times it may require a porcelain veneer or even a porcelain crown if much of the tooth is broken away. In the most severe case, you may require a root canal and a post if the nerve of the tooth is involved.

Q. I had to have a bridge replaced recently. The new bridge is too low and I have a space of about 2 and a half teeth where my new, upper bridge isn’t touching my bottom teeth. My dentist says it will self adjust. But it’s been over 2 months and it doesn’t appear to ba adjusting at all. I’m wondering if it will eventually readjust, and if not, what my options are. Thank you
A. I think you should discuss this with your dentist. If your teeth are not touching on that side of your mouth you may not be able to function properly and this should be evaluated.

Q. I am going to be getting partial dentures for my bottom teeth next week. I was just wondering how long it generally takes to get used to it. Would I be okay going back to work the same day or should I take a day or two off? I work as a receptionist.
A. A new partial denture can take time to get used to. You may require an adjustment or two but I don’t think you will need to take time off work.

Q. Do you or any one you know help those who are in need of treatment, but can not pay for services?
A.
We wish we could help all those in need. There are so many deserving people who need care but there is only so much we can do. That is why we are members of the charitable foundation of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Give Back a Smile foundation. It is through the foundation that we restore the smiles and lives of victims of domestic violence. If this is your situation or the situation of someone you know you can contact the Academy. If not my suggestion is to seek treatment at a State run facility such as a local Dental School. The dental services are not free but are provided at a significantly lower fee due to a teaching environment.
