Q.
Is smile makeover a way to lessen the price of cosmetic treatments or is it just a mixture of treatments put together in one category?
A.
The term smile makeover generally refers to any treatment or combination of treatments used to enhance or improve your smile.

I am going to need a
dental implant, althought that is not what this is really about. I am quite a keen coffee and tea drinker, and I also smoke, all of which has worked to stain my teeth a tarnish their natural colour. I am now wanting to get my teeth whitened, but was wondering whether I should get this done before the
dental implant procedure? Would you be able to advise me on this matter?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The ideal time to whiten your teeth is once the implant itself has been placed. There is usually a healing time of around 2-3 months before the final crown can go on the implant. During this healing time would be a perfect time to then have your teeth whitened. This is also to enable the dentist to chose the right colour for your new
dental implant crown. Hope this is helpful.

My dentist has identified an infection through an x-ray to one of my teeth, and has said it will need to be removed through surgery at the hospital, as they will need to cut into the gum. Not looking forward to it. Would you be able to inform me what the process would involve, to ease my worries somewhat?
A.
This is a good question and your concern is justified. It would not be possible for me to speculate on what procedure is needed. Speak to your dentist and express your concern. He can better describe what will happen.
Q.
Does laser teeth whitening offer better results in comparison to other common methods? Is it a still relatively new method of teeth whitening, or is it well tested and trusted now?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your enquiry. Laser tooth whitening is an effective way of whitening your teeth, however if it was to be compared to a home system such as enlighten the results are more predictably whiter with a home treatment system. The exciting area in my view is when you start with a laser system and follow the whitening up with a home system. In my experiance this gives you the best result.

When I spit after brushing my teeth I have noticed that there are specks of blood. This is something I only started to notice last week, but is pretty constant now. I have tried to find where it is coming from but have been unable to do so. Could this be a sign of a real problem?
A.
Healthy teeth and gums do not bleed. If the bleeding is intermittent and your teeth and gums are healthy and checked regularly than I wouldn’t be too concerned but you should have it checked by a dentist.

I recently (monday) had one of my bottom front teeth out and replaced with a denture. Ever since my jaw has been aching Is this normal or should i go back to the dentist? Thanks.
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. There is sometimes discomfort following an extraction of a tooth. My advice would be to give it at least 3 to 4 days. If the pain is not getting any better go back and see your dentist. Hope this is helpful.

Q.
Is there a particular kind of toothpaste which is good to help with sensitive teeth? Possibly even a mouthwash?
A.
Over the counter Sensodyne. Your dentist may be able to recommend a high fluoride tooth paste with a prescription.

Q.
Three days ago I got a dental crown, but, for some unexplained reason, the crown has fallen out. The earliest appointment I could get at the dentist is early monday, but what can I do in the mean time to make sure my remaining tooth is not getting damaged? Should I be more careful when brushing my teeth?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. It is unusual for a crown to fall out so early after it has been fitted. If the crown can go directly back onto the tooth, you can purchase some temporary cement from an pharmacy and tempoariily recement it. Alternatively, my advice would be to brush it softly and stick to a soft diet till monday.

I have great trouble in getting my twelve year old son to brush his teeth. He is a stubborn one. He puts effort into his clothes and hair but does not seem to realise that his teeth are even more important. Have you any advice to make sure a fussy teenager works to keep their teeth in good order?
A.
If I did I would be a millionaire! My advice is to give him an electric brush like Sonicare. At least this will help even during the short time he may be using it. After a while, when girls take notice of his teeth, he may change.
