Do you have any idea why my gums have receded so badly?

May 27th, 2010

Q. Hello, my gums have badly receded and it’s causing me a lot of trouble because now my front two teeth are very sensitive and they feel loose. What can i do to help this? and do you have any idea why my gums have receded to this extent? I’ve always taken good care of my teeth and attend dental check-ups regularly. thank you for your time.

A. Recession of gum tissue is a clear sign of something wrong.  This can be attributal to a number of things…..Decay, overzealous brushing, a traumatic bite pattern or periodontal disease.  The proper diagnosis is very important because it would be treated differently for each one.  Make sure your dentist is aware of your concerns and have him refer you to a speacialist if he is not clear as to why this is happening.

If you wear braces are you more inclined to develop oral health problems?

May 27th, 2010

Q. Can you tell me if wearing braces will make you more inclined to develop oral health problems like cavities and gum disease? Just like to know before I begin any kind of treatment,.

A. No, just the opposite.  Long term braces will improve your dental health.  During the time you are in braces you need to be aware of how important your dental hygiene is.  If you maintain a high level of dental hygiene during this time you are at minimal risk.  If you don’t problems can develop but usually will subside when the braces are removed.  Dr. Lemongello

What treatment would you recommend for big tooth gaps?

May 26th, 2010

Q. for big gaps in teeth what treatment would you recommend. I am talking about things like veneer and lumineers or even invisalign or other braces treatment. Not all that sure about getting braces though as I would rather get the problem sorted sooner rather than later.

A. The most expeditious route to your problem would be with veneers.  Braces can offer a nice solution to aligning the teeth and usually the course of treatment is 1-3 years depending upon the amount of tooth movement needed.  However, it will not address the improvement of color and shape of your teeth which often is the most important appearance consideration.  All of this can be accomplished with properly designed veneers by a qualified cosmetic dentist.

What is causing my bad breath?

May 25th, 2010

Q. Only recently i’ve discovered that my breath smells bad and my mouth is constantly dry, i brush my teeth twice a day as advised to so i have no idea what’s causing this, what should i do? it’s causing a lot of social problems! thank you

A. I would consult with a dentist and see if they can identify a cause.  Breath malodor can be caused by many different things, from diet ti medical conditions as well as gum disease and tooth decay. Your dry mouth isn’t helping.  There are products available specifically designed to treat breath malodor. Products like OxyFresh are very effective.  Dr. Lemongello

What smile makeover treatment would you recommend for me?

May 25th, 2010

Q. Hello, i feel i need a smile makeover. My teeth are very crooked and decayed because of my phobia of the dentist. Not only that my smile seems very droopy and my lips are now sooo thin! What treatments can you recommend for my bad state? Money isn’t an option! Thank you

A. Thank you for your question.  Perhaps the most dramatic thing that can be done to improve facial attractiveness is to enhance the worn smile.  This can easily be done through the advances in cosmetic dentistry.  Proper design of your smile can improve support of your lips.  This is always a dramatic effect when doing a smile makeover that many often fail to overlook.  Additionally, we can accentuate the effect by considering the administration of dermal fillers in the lips and around the mouth.  If I can be of assistance please view my website at www.smilesbygeorge.com .  You can notify me at 317-841-1111.  Thanks

Can I do anything to stop my jaw moving when I sleep?

May 20th, 2010

Q. Hello. When i sleep at night on my left hand side i can feel my jaw move out of place slightly to the right and when i sleep in the right hand side my jaw sits just fine. But i have noticed now that my jaw does slant a little to the left.. why is this? can i do anything to stop it shifting further? I don’t want to undergo any surgery as it’s not that serious. Thank you.

A. I would not be too concerned at this point but you can have this condition evaluated by your dentist. Like all other joints in your body there cartilage between the bones.  The jaw joint is no different.  In this case the cartilage may be displaced some causing this effect.  If your jaw starts popping or clicking see your dentist.  Dr. Lemongello
