Does teeth whitening at the dentist cause sensitivity?

Q.
When I do my at home teeth whitening I experience quite a bit of tooth sensitivity and duly can not keep the trays in my mouth for too long. It feels like I am not getting the most fomr the treatment because of it. Can you tell me if the whitening treatments offered at the dentists are any easier on the teeth as I do want to keep my teeth at a good colour?
A.
Sensitivity is common when using whitening materials.  Generally take home whitening products cause less sensitivity than the in office products used by the dentist.  I would recommend using the whitening products for no more than 10 minutes a day.  This should be sufficient to whiten your teeth and may help keep the sensitivity down.  Your dentist may also be able to give you some fluoride to add to your tray to help with sensitivity.  Dr. Lemongello
