Monday, June 27th, 2011

Last week I had a tooth extracted and hey presto my dentist has now said I have something called dry socket. What is this exactly? Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, a dry socket is basically an infection of the bone surrounding the extraction area. the main treatment is flushing the area with corsodyl and antibiotics. it is more common in areas which have been heavily infected and smoking patients. hope this is helpful.

Invisalign express is slightly cheaper than invisalign at most clinics, it requires less aligners and treatments times are said to be smaller, but the type of cases it treats is much less.

Advice conerning oral cancer?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
I have just got the horrible news that my mum has oral cancer. She is going to need to undergo surgery to try and beat it. Would you please be able to offer some advice on how I can help her through this, and what the surgery may involve?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, firstly i am sorry to hear the news about your mother. secondly if the cancer has been found early there is a good chance the surgery will be minor and the level of chemo and radiotherapy will be very sucessful. the surgery will involve removing the cancerious tissue. this can be bone but also teeth, so reconstuction of teeth and bone may be required. my advice will be to try to attend the appointments with your mum so you can also discuss any questions you and your mother may have with the surgeons.

Why would my dental crown be causing bad breath?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
One of my front teeth is a crown, but ever since getting it just under a year ago I have had a slight problem with bad breath. Nothing major but I thinkg it is noticeable. Is there anything I can do to stop it?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, the only reason a crown would be giving you bad breathe is if the gum around the crown was not being adequately cleaned and you were not flossing around it. my advice would be to see you dentist and hygiensit and see what they say.

hope this is helpful.

What does the gum contouring procedure involve?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
Is the gum contouring treatment that is available for gummy smile performed at the dentist or is it classed as some kind of major surgery? What does it involve, if you could please give me a brief description?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, there are three treatments to correct a gummy smile:

1:gum contouring which is cutting away the excess gum and if needed underlying bone to create longer teeth and also reduce the gummy smile.

2: lip repositioning surgery which will lower the upper lip so when you smile will show less gum, more indicated if the size of the teeth are ideal and gum contouring is not needed.

3: botox in the upper lip which is non surgical and can lower the upper lip temporarily to decrease the gummy smile.

hope this is helpful.

Which is best out of lingual and invisalign braces?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
Which are the more popular out of lingual and invisalign braces? Which would you say it the better choice for straightening crooked teeth? Which are more easily available at clinics?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, lingual braces are conventional braces but instead of being stuck on the fronts of the teeth they are stuck on the backs of your teeth. there are a very good way to striaghten crooked teeth.

Invisalign is a clear brace system which uses aligners. Aligners are thin clear plastic gum shields which are placed into the mouth over two weeks, the aligner moves the teeth to a certain position and then you remove that aligner and place the next aligner in the mouth. this happens until the teeth are striaght. it can take longer to correct crooked teeth with this type of treatment.

i would say invisalign is a very popular treatment as more general dentist can perform this type of treatment whereas lingual braces is more complexed to perform so less dentists are confident in doing this treatment.

What is the average cost of 5 dental veneers?

Friday, June 24th, 2011
Q.
Would you be able to give me an estimate of how much it would cost to get 5 dental veneers? Also, would the type of veneer (porcelain for example) have an affect on the cost?
A.
hi, many thanks for your email, the cost of 5 porcelain veneers can vary dependant on which practice you chose to have the treatment done by and which technician is making the work. the cost per veneer can range from £500 – £1000. the type of veneer material is usually porcelain but many laboratory have now branded there veneers very much like clothing, so there are products such as mac veneers, lumineers, davinci veneers. do not be fooled though most are of similar quality and like buying into a brand can work out much more expensive. hope this is helpful.
