Is there a dental floss for teeth which are tightly fitted together?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
My teeth are too tightly packed together for dental floss to work. Are there any special floss’ available on the market for such cases?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. There is dental floss which is like a piece of string or there are also dental tapes. Try both to see which will work best. The other thing to mention is it is unusual to not be able to floss as the teeth are too tight but you can if needed use interdental brushes to make sure the areas inbetween your teeth are cleaned throughly.

Hope this is helpful.

What can I do to improve the strength of my tooth enamel?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
My dentist has informed me that my teeth have weak enamel and that this could lead to further problems unless I take better care of my teeth. Are there any toothpaste of mouthwas which are particularly good for upholding tooth enamel?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The toothpaste which springs to mind is pronamel by sensodyne, which has been proved to help strengthen enamel. Also, a fluoridated mouthwash will also help keep teeth healthy and strong. But, remember, dental decay is more down to frequency of sugar intake. Try to limit your main sugar consumption to the three main meals of the day. Hope this is helpful.

Can you whiten the colour of crowns?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
I was given four crowns to replace some missing teeth but have noticed that they have got slightly discoloured. Is it possible to get the colour of these brightened to that of my normal teeth without the need to get new ones altogether?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. Unfortunately crowns can not be whitened so the only option would be to have them redone. Hope this is helpful.

Do any UK dentist offer gum whitening?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
Hi Dr Solanki. Would you happen to be in the know as to whether you can get your gums lightned, similar to that of teeth hiwtening? I have heard about this starting in America but nothing here. I would really like to get this done as my gums are a nasty dark colour after too much smoking.
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. At the moment there is no clinic that i am aware of in england thats is offering this type of treatment.

What different types of fillings are there?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
I know there are a couple of different fillings you can get, but I would like to know whether there is one that is particularly good and long lasting?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The main filling materials which are used in modern dentistry today are:

1:composite, works well, is bonded into the tooth can be used for small to medium sized fillings andcan last for around 5-7 years on average, white in colour.

2:porcelain, works well again, bonded into the tooth, can be used for medium to large sized fillings. Can last for up to 10 years, white in colour and can be very aesthetic.

3:Gold, works well, is cemented into the tooth and can be used for medium to large sized fillings. Can last for 15 years +. Gold in colour, not aesthetic.

Hope this information is helpful.

Is it necessary to get a loose filling treated?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
One of my fillings feels loose when I floss around it. It is situated at the back of my mouth, and is becoming quite sensitive to cold liquids. I am concerned damage may be done to my remaining tooth if something is not done. Should I get it checked out as soon as possible, or is it okay to leave for a short while? Don’t want to imagine how much it will cost me to get sorted.
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The problem is the longer you leave it the bigger the problem will get. At the moment it sounds as though the tooth may just require a new filling. However, if left it could progress into the tooth getting decay and the decay progressing into the nerve of the tooth, which would then require root canal treatment.

My honest advice would be to get it checked out by your dentist.

Hope this is helpful.

I have a fear of the dentist. Can you offer any advice?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
I am twelve years old and am terrified of the dentist. I get so worked up and anxious on the morning of an appointment that I end up being sick or getting a bad headache. I try to relax but I can’t halp but imagine what bad things may happen. I am worried I may stop going to the dentist altogether if this continues. Can you please offer any advice?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The best advice I can give is to try to find a dentist you can get along with and build a relationship so you can start to trust him or her as this will then build confidence. As for the bad thoughts, the best advice is have an open mind and explain your anxiety to your dentist so they can slow things down for you and try to help you through it.

Which are the better quality dentures?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
Are there different types of dentures, with some being better than others, and therefore more expensive? I am currently looking at dentures as an option but want to make sure I get the best treatment possible. Thank you.
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The better quality dentures are down to a stronger accrylic being used. The quality of teeth play an important role in the overall cost of the dentures. There are also better ways of achieving a better fit and bite, using systems such as Ivoclar BPS system which also adds onto the price. My advice would be to seek a dentist that either specialises in dentures to give you all the options available. Hope this is helpful.
