What causes teeth staining?

Thursday, March 10th, 2011
Q.
What are the biggest causes of teeth staining? I don’t smoke and try to stay away from coffee but my teeth are getting a nasty colour to them? What other things may be causing this?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, although smoking and coffee and red wine are the main reasons for staining, other things such as food that you eat and drink can cause staining. also the age of your teeth can cause them to look discoloured. staining can be classified as intrinsic(internal) or extrinsic(external). extrinsic staining can be removed by a hygienist visit. intrinsic staining is much harder to remove and things like whitening can help.

Why is my mouth dry since getting braces?

Thursday, March 10th, 2011
Q.
Since starting treatment with braces I am finding that my mouth gets really dry and that I have to drink lots of water to keep on top of it. I would have thought that I would be producing more saliva after hearing about braces. Will this go away, is there something I can do?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, some people react differently to things in there mouths. see how it goes but keep drinking the water and hopefully things will get better.

Can I replace silver fillings with white ones?

Thursday, March 10th, 2011
Q.
When I was younger I had to get far too many dental fillings, the horrible looking grey ones as well. Now, I make sure to keep my teeth in a much better ciondition but I still have the horrible grey fillings there. Would I be able to get them changed for the better looking modern ones or are they likely to come to thed of their life soon enough anyway?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, this is a very common treatment, the silver fillings can be replaced for white ones. hope this is helpful.

Should I be worried that tooth ache has now transferred to jaw as well?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.
Recently I have had tooth ache and this seems to have transferred into a slight jaw pain as well. I can’t help but think they are related and that there may be a problem. I have booked in a dentist appointment for next week. Have you any idea what it may be?
A.
hi many thanks for your email, if the tooth ache has radiated to the jaw, the first thing that springs to mind is that there may be a infection in a tooth. hope this is helpful.
