Is blood caused by brushing teeth a sign of underlying problems?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
Every now and then when my brush my teeth there is blood when I rinse my mouth. This does not happen all that often so I am not too worried, but would still like to know if there could be any underlying problem. I don’t brush my teeth too vigorously so I doubt that is the reason.
A.

Healthy teeth and gums do not bleed.  If the bleeding is intermittent and your teeth and gums are healthy and checked regularly than I wouldn’t be too concerned. Make sure you are using a soft brush.  When it does bleed try to find where from and have it checked by a dentist.

How can I overcome my fear of the dentist?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
I have always had a fear of the dentist since I was young. I must have had a traumatic experiene or something. However, I worry that my fear will stop me from getting any serious dental problems dealt with, and that this will give me a horrible smile. Do you have any advice as to how I can overcome my anxiety?
A.

My advice is to see your dentist often when there aren’t any problems. This way your dental visits can be fun, uneventful and with good news of healthy teeth at the end of the visit. Once you become accustomed to easy dental visits you will find that there isn’t anything to fear. Preventive dentistry is the best way to avoid a fearful situation. Communicate with your dentist and let him know how you feel. This way they can use a little extra TLC.

What treatment will dental insurance cover?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
Are you in the know on what kind of treatment dental insurance will cover? Do any of your patients use insurance to cover the price of their treatment? I am guessing it won’t cover cosmetic treatments such as invisalign.
A.

All insurance policies are different and what they will and won’t cover varies by what is stated in the contract. You would need to read your contract or speak to someone at the insurance company to find out what is covered. If your insurance policy covers orthodontic treatment some percentage or specific dollar amount of the cost of Invisalign would be covered. You would have to speak to your dentist or the insurance company to find out how much.

What can I do to treat my flurosis?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
My dentist has informed me that I may have a case of flurosis, but that he will need to have a further look on my next appointment. Could you please tell me exactly what this is and how I can prevent it? My dentist did not seem too worried by it.
A.

Fluorosis is a benign condition where too much fluoride has been taken up into the tooth during its development and the enamel of the tooth is affected. There is no way for you to prevent it once the teeth have formed. It usually results in discoloration of the tooth. Other than a cosmetic issue it is not a problem.

Is it possible to use teeth whitening on dentures?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
I have a complete upper denture and have had this for quite some time now. However, their colour has gotten darker over time and they are not looking quite so good at the moment. Is it possible to get dentures whitened, or are there any other alternative options?
A.

It is not possible to whiten your existing denture. Is that what you really want? As the denture material ages it starts to look artificial and collects bacteria that cannot be removed. The teeth start to wear and it gives an aged appearance. You may be surprised to hear that dentures should be replaced or relined every five years. The only way to improve it is to have a new one made. With today’s new denture materials and smile design techniques we can create beautiful, natural looking smiles with dentures.

Should wisdom teeth be removed if they affect teeth structure?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
If wisdom teeth come through and begin to mess with the straightness of other surrounding teeth then is it just best to get them removed? Or are they necessary to the functioning of the mouth?
A.

If wisdom teeth are causing a problem they should be removed. In most cases they are not necessary for function.

What are the causes of gum recession?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
My gums seem to be receeding, and this is making both my teeth and gums quite sensitive. I think I may be a little too forecful when brushing my teeth – could this be the cause? Would you be able to advise me on the necessary treatment?
A.
There are many causes of gum recession. It may be over aggressive brushing with a hard brush. Other causes are genetic, position of the tooth if the teeth are crowded and grinding of the teeth (bruxism). All of these would need to be evaluated and addressed before advice on your treatment can be given. Treatment may be as simple as a switching to a soft tooth brush and being less aggressive. Other treatment may involve straightening your teeth and adjusting your bite. Still, further treatment may be gum grafting to replace what is lost. I would recommend you see a Periodontist and let him evaluate the situation. Dr. Lemongello

Are there any alternatives to dentures?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
After years of poor dental hygiene my teeth are no longer in a good condition, what with chips and cracks on my teeth, and a bad level of decay. My dentist has now informed me that I will need to get dentures, but I am not particularly keen on this. Are there any other treatment options, or will my teeth just continue to get worse if I don’t get dentures?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. Until i can assess your mouth myself it is difficult to say whether this is the right treatment for you. If a denture is your only option then you could opt for implants instead, which would be a fixed alternative.

Hope this is helpful.

What can I do to help combat dry mouth?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
For the past month I have developed an annoying problem with dry mouth. I try drinking more water to combat the problem but it always comes back. Is there any particular course of action I should take to fix this problem? Thanks.
A.
One of the main causes of dry mouth is medications you may be taking. Check with your doctor regarding any medication that you are taking. Stay hydrated as much as possible and you may find some help with a saliva substitute like Biotene in your local pharmacy. Dr. Lemongello

What treatment is available to fix gaps between front teeth?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.
Can you please inform me of the treatment options available to close the gap between the two front teeth. This has been the vain of my existence for as long as I can remember and I am desperate to get it sorted.
A.
There are 3 main treatment options to close the gap between your teeth, depending on the situation. They are Orthodontics (braces or Invisalign), composite bonding or porcelain veneers. All have advantages and disadvantages, so investigate them all prior to your final choice. Dr. Lemongello
