Would teeth whitening be suitable for my daughter’s few problem teeth?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.
As a christmas present , well probabaly a late one now seen as there are only a couple of days left!, my daughter of 19 has asked to have her teeth whitened. Her teeth are in fact quite straight but there are two problem teeth that are of a bad colour. What would be thwe best choice of systems for her and would it be safe?
A.
Whitening can be unpredictable when trying to treat a few problem teeth. Take home whitening with whitening trays is usually the most predicatble. All whitening is safe.  Consult with a dentist on the different options available for whitening.  Dr. Lemongello

Is it absolutely necessary to have my premolars extracted before having lingual braces fitted?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.
I am due to have lingual braces fitted but my orthodontist has suggested I need to have my premolars extracted. I am however very apprehensive as I have heard that this may change my facial features. What would you suggest I do?
A.
I would recommend a second opinion to determine what is best for you.  Removal of bicuspids, in my opinion, should be as a last resort.  My guess is you live in the UK.  It may be a little challenging but I would recommend you find someone who will consult you on doing orthodontics without removing the teeth.  Dr. Lemongello

Following having teeth bonded with composite to fix broken teeth is it possible to have them filed down?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.
Hi. My 10 year old daughter broke her 2 upper front teeth. It is an arch shape. The doctor bonded them with composite.I’m wondering if it possible to file both teeth shorter as they are already longer than the other teeth.I also want to know how short can they be filed and if this would affect her speech or looks in any negative way.
A.
I am sorry to hear of your daughter misfortune.  It seems the dentist performed the appropriate treatment restoring the teeth to their original length.  If the teeth seem too long than it is a result of the position they have erupted in to. She is only 10 years old and significant growth will occur probably making her teeth seem more appropriate in size. If not, The appropriate treatment would be to move them with braces into the proper relationship and proportion with her other teeth.  You would not arbitrarily file down or shorten teeth.  Ultimately this would damage the teeth.  I would recommend you consult with your dentist and perhaps an orthodontist to evaluate your daughters situation.  Dr. Lemongello

What is the most suitable treatment for missing teeth?

Friday, February 5th, 2010
Q.
I am going to get four teeth removed because of gum disease and will be getting a partial denture soon after when the gums are sorted. He then said that some time after that I can get dental implants to cplete the job. I am unsure about implants and was wondering if a bridge may be a suitable alternative to the implants? Which would you say is the bestter option for me seen as I have had gum disease, well still have it.

A.

It is difficult to assess your situation.  Usually if you are a candidate for implants they are planned initially.  Implants are your best option but depending on what teeth remain and the condition of those teeth bridges may be considered.  Speak to your dentist about the expected treatment.  Dr. Lemongello

Do any dentists offer free treatment for patients in need?

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Q.
Do you or any one you know help those who are in need of treatment, but can not pay for services?

A.

We wish we could help all those in need. There are so many deserving people who need care but there is only so much we can do. That is why we are members of the charitable foundation of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Give Back a Smile foundation. It is through the foundation that we restore the smiles and lives of victims of domestic violence. If this is your situation or the situation of someone you know you can contact the Academy. If not my suggestion is to seek treatment at a State run facility such as a local Dental School. The dental services are not free but are provided at a significantly lower fee due to a teaching environment.

What could white blotches on teeth be?

Friday, September 18th, 2009
Q.
I have just noticed that there are what appear to be white blotches on my teeth. I did not notice this until yesterday and am unsure what it is. Is it a sign of anything serious?

A.

Not usually. These spots are often developmental discolorations in the surface of the teeth. If your teeth are dry or in certain types of light they may be more obvious. White spots can also be areas of the teeth that are decalcifying and could become cavities. With good hygiene and use of Fluoride these should not change. Consult your dentist to be sure.

Do clinics offer specialist treatment for people with behavioural disorders?

Friday, September 18th, 2009
Q.
Are there clinics which offer specialist treatments for people with behavioural disorders? Is it similar to that offered to nervous patients?

A.

Depending what the disorder is you should be able to find a specialist in your area to address your needs. For example for Autism or Mentally handicapped individuals a Pediatric dentist often can use an Outpatient Facility to provide general anesthesia to manage the situation. If this is an adult situation a good resource is to speak to a respected specialist such as an Oral Surgeon or Periodontist and ask them for a referral to someone they work with who can address your specific needs. Theses specialists are good resources because they work with many dentists.

should i use tooth whitening kits from the shops?

Friday, September 18th, 2009
Q.
I know you can get tooth whitening kits from the shops, but these can’t be as good as getting it done by a professional, can it?

A.

The most predictable, safest way to whiten your teeth is in a dental office under the supervision of a dentist.  In the dental office everything is custom made to fit properly and provide the optimal, safest environment for whitening.  Anything else is a compromise.

Is cleaning your tongue as important as caring for teeth and gums?

Friday, September 18th, 2009
Q.
I know you are supposed to keep your teeth clean and also your gums, but what about your tongue? Do you need to give this just as much attention when cleaning your teeth?

A.

Yes. Our office often recommends tongue hygiene as well. Bacteria can get trapped in the surface fissures of the tongue. Once here the debris can remain there adding to breath malodor, halitosis or bad breath. Tongue hygiene is very simple using one of the many different tongue scraping devices on the market today. Once you use a tongue scrappin device and see all the bacteria debris that can be removed you will never neglect tongue hygiene again!

Is there any point in having wisdom teeth?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009
Q.
What is the point in wisdom teeth? They come through at differing times for people, some in their early teens and some even in their thirties, but is there any point to them? Your teeth are already formed to a good shape (for some people) so why are they needed? Not a problem, but mild curiosity.

A.

As man has evolved so has the size and shape of our jaws. There was a time when wisdom teeth played a role in eating food. Wisdom teeth no longer have an important role but are still present similar to the appendix’s role in our digestive system.
