I have very stained teeth, which whitening treatments can’t change, what are my options?

Thursday, August 11th, 2011
Q.
hello

I have extremely stained teeth from antibiotics i had to have as a child. I have tried teeth whitening, both at home and in salons and they just haven’t work to any proper degree. I have been looking at veneers and i really like the look of them, but am a bit worried about the amount of damage they will do to my teeth. Do you have to have so much enamel shaved off, or do i have any other options for my stained teeth?

thank you

A.
I completely understand your concern. I too suffered from the same problem. Unfortunately, there are no whitening products that work. The only option is porcelain veneers. Fortunately, there is no need to worry. Only a minimal amount of tooth needs to be smoothed away, about the thickness of a business card. I have had my veneers for more than 12 years and have been happy with my choice since the first day. Visit our website www.lernerlemongello.com to view some beautiful results. Let me know if we can help. Dr. Lemongello

Im not happy with my smile after braces, what should I do?

Thursday, August 11th, 2011
Q.
Hello. I got my braces taken off a year ago, and I am unhappy with the results. My bite is misaligned, and because of this, my mid line does not match up, my smile is crooked, and I have to move my lower jaw to the left in order for my back teeth to touch/bite down. I have expressed my concerns to my ortho but he insists everything is okay. What should I do? Thanks for your help.
A.
I would recommend you seek another opinion and if necessary additional opinions. Keep in mind though that your situation may be the best result possible due to circumstances that are specific to you. It also may be the best result that can be accomplished by the dentist you have been seeing. Once you have additional opinions regarding the result you can also make decisions of what options are available to correct any remaining problems. Perhaps that means treatment with another dentist. Visit our website at www.lernerlemongello.com to view cases where changes like yours were necessary to create a beautiful balanced smile and bite. Many cases Dr. Lemongello

I am sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation. You may try to seek out your nearest Dental school. Teaching institutions are ofetn looking for patients and the expense is usually less. Perhaps this is an option. Dr. Lemongello

What can I do to prevent getting dry mouth when I wake up?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011
Q.
Each morning I wake up I have this horrible dry mouth. This is really disgusting and has been bothering me for about two weeks now. Do many people get this? Is there anything I can do about it?
A.

Many people experience dry mouth.  There are many causes such as mouth breathing due to sinus problems or as a resulting side effect from medication.  You can discuss this with your dentist who may have advice for you specific needs. Stay hydrated as much as possible.

How long do fillings usually last?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011
Q.
I just had a filling put in on my upper right teeth toward the back. I would just like to know the life span of fillings. Are they supposed to last quite a bit of time? Does this depend on the type of filling you receive?
A.

If a filling was all that was needed and it was performed in a conscientious manor than it should last many years.  Dr. Lemongello

What are the causes of canker sores?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011
Q.
I get canker sores quite often, This is something my mother usually gets as well, so I suppose it must be genetic in some respects. Is there something I can do to try and stop this from ahppening? Is it to do with oral hygiene?
A.

It is still unknown exactly why some people are prone to Canker sores.  It does not have to do with hygiene.  It is suspected to be systemic in nature with certain factors contributing to their occurrence.  Some of these things are trauma to the tissue and certain acidic foods in the diet such as citrus.         Dr. Lemongello

Do dentists offer special services for people with epilepsy?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I was recently diagnosed with epliepsy, and am concerned that I may have an episode during treatment. Have you had any experience with epileptic patients and would you be able to offer me any advice?
A.

Advise your dentist about your seizers. If your seizers are in an active state I would avoid dental treatment. As long as you take your medication and your seizers are under control you should not be concerned.

What will happen when crown is at the end of it’s life span?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I have been told that my crown will not last more than about five more years. This causes several images of what will happen to go through my mind. What will actually happen? Will it just fall out?
A.

Allow your dentist to monitor the situation. Be proactive. When your dentist tells you it is time to treat it, even if it is a little before its time, do it then, before it becomes a bigger problem. You wouldn’t wait until your tire blew out before you changed it, don’t wait for your tooth to break either.

Could my toothache be an indication of underlying problems?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I had toothache for about two weeks but it now seems to have gone. It was not too painful but was noticeable. Is this just something that happens on occassion, or could there be an underlying problem?
A.

This could be an indication of an underlying problem. I would recommend you see your dentist to have it checked. Dr. Lemongello

My bite is misaligned after wearing braces, will this change over time?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
Its been about 3 years since I have had my braces completely off. During my treatment I had to use an expander due to the fact that I had type III Malocclusion. Ever since I’ve had my braces off however, I’ve been left with this open bite on the right side of my mouth that doesn’t seem to be closing. I want to know, will this close naturally or will I have to seek more orthodontic treatment for my bite to level out? The open side of my bite really makes my mouth look asymmetrical and affects the symmetry of my whole face, a problem I never had before braces.
A.
Unfortunately this will not correct itself on its own. You can consider additional orthodontic treatment but perhaps a restorative option would be a better depending on your needs. If you visit our website smile gallery at www.lernerlemongello.com, there is a case of an African American man with a class III anterior open bite. Also, under the media section I published an article on restoring a class III malocclusion with a restorative option. This type of treatment is very different than orthodontics and you would need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of treatment. Consult with your orthodontist for orthodontic treatment but you would need to consult with a highly trained restorative dentist if the restorative option is considered. Dr. Lemongello
