Is flossing essential to healthy teeth and gums?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.
Would you say floss is essential to good healthy teeth and gums. I know it can obvisouly have benefits but I just can’t bring myself to be bothered doing it once a day never mind twice. It jsut seems like so much effort. So, what is so important about it that I should do it?
A.
It depends on your level of health. You don’ need you teeth to be healthy. If you have healthy gums and teeth then you don’t need to floss. If you don’t then I would recommend you do whatever you can to keep your teeth and gums healthy including flossing. Dr. Lemongello

Is 6 month smiles similar to invisalign?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.
Is 6 month smile quite a similar treatment to invisalign?
A.
Both are forms of Orthodontic treatment. 6 Month Smiles uses traditional bands and brackets in an accelerated time frame. Invisalign uses clear invisible aligners or trays to move the teeth. Dr. Lemongello

What treatment is there for missing teeth?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.
Three years ago I had a tooth knocked out when I fell flat on my face. I didn’t get it treated as I didn’t have the money and the gum has started to cover the area. What treatment can be used to replace this tooth and give me a better smile?
A.
There are multiple possibilities depending on the health of the adjacent teeth and the amount of gum and bone lost due to the loss of the tooth.  The options are:

1. Dental implant and crown
2. Bonded bridge.
3. Conventional fixed bridge
4. Removable partial denture to replace the missing tooth.
All of these have advantages and disadvantages that should be discussed with a dentist.  Dr. Lemongello

Can you pay monthly for many treatments?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.
Do you know if many practices offer monthly payments for dental treatment? What about Invisalign?
A.
I would expect most practices to have some form of monthly payment plans.  Invislalign is involved with a company offering payment plans called Care Credit. Ask your dentist what form of payment options are available.  Dr. Lemongello

What options are there to fix a cracked tooth?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.
One of my teeth has been cracked and the dentist has said I can have bonding to mend it up but I am unsure whether this will look all that good. Are there any other options for a crack tooth?
A.
There are many options for a cracked tooth depending on the severity of the crack. Bonding, if done with skill, is a very good option and is a simple, inexpensive repair. Other options are a porcelain veneer or crown. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.  Discuss this with your dentist.  Dr. Lemongello

How can I keep my teeth their new colour after teeth whitening?

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011
Q.

Hi Doctor. I have been contemplating wheteh or not to have whitening treatment and wondered whether, wonce they are whitened, will they get stained easily? wHAT CAN i do to keep them as white for as long as possible?

A.
Once you whiten your teeth they are no more proan to staining than prior to whitening. If you drink tea and coffee, they will stain over time but this can be cleaned off by the dentist. To keep them white just touch them up once a month with the same whitening system you whitened them with. Dr. Lemongello

Can implants be used to support dentures?

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011
Q.
Hello Drs, can you tell me if dental implants can help to support dentures. I have heard that they can but I am not clued up on this sort of thing. I have had a denture for a year now but it doesn’t fell secure. I was hoping implants would be able to assist with this problem.
A.

Yes, implants can be used to help support and provide security of a denture. An implant supported denture is relatively simple and may be one of the most satisfying procedures for denture wearers we can provide.

What is the difference between veneers and lumineers?

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011
Q.
Would you be able to tell me what the difference is between veners and lumineers. My dentists has recommended them both to me as I dont want braces but am not sure what the difference is?
A.

There is little difference in that veneers and Lumineers are both made of porcelain and share the technique of being minimally invasive. Porcelain veneers come in different qualities.  Lumineers are a proprietary form of porcelain veneers marketed by the company. However, traditional porcelain veneers fabricated by a skilled technician are much more artistically crafted in regards to beauty and natural appearance. Traditional veneers also have a better fit on the tooth and can be made of better materials than Lumineers. Dr. Lemongello
