Are there different variations of dental veneers?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Q. Hi i’m looking into getting veneers. My teeth are in good physical condition but they’re very stained and various teeth whitening systems have previously failed. I was wondering about the variations of veneers, I’ve heard that teeth have to be shaved and filed down? In your opinion which is the best type of veneer?

A. The best veneer is one that is placed using the most conservative approach possible utilizing the best material for the situation.  There is no one best veneer. Instead you should choose a dentist who understands the different materials and techniques available and discuss what is the best option for you. The teeth are not shaved down.  Most porcelain veneers requires minimal tooth reshaping for the veneer to fit properly. I would invite you to visit our website at www.lernerlemongello.com. Let us know if we can help. Dr. Lemongello

What options are there to treat severe tooth overcrowding?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Q. Hello, i have a problem of overcrwoding in my lower teeth more than 6cm as described by my doc. and he said in oredr to fix that he will have to remove one of my cebtral incisors as removing a crwon will cause my mouth to be empty because i have a small mouth. and after he does that, he will have to instill a fixed wire behind my lower teeth so as the symmerty of my teeth is not lost. i am worried about the complications of the fixed wire as it may cause dental caries and accumulation of plaque. so i need your adives regarding other possible options and your opinion on the fixed wire. thank you.

A. In cases with severe crowding often a tooth is removed to create space to straighten the remaining teeth. Dental treatment involves some risk but if you maintain good hygiene that risk is diminished.  If you are concerned about the treatment get a second opinion with another dentist.  Dr. Lemongello

Do you know of a cure for dry mouth and burning tongue?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Q. HI – Do you know if there is such a thing as a REAL CURE for dry mouth, burning tongue and roof of mouth? I tested negative for Sjogren’s, Diabetes, yeast infection, thrush, you name it. My GP says it is NOT from my meds, (I don’t believe them) sent me to ear/nose/throat doctor. After test results, he gave up, said he didn’t know what was wrong with my mouth, and that there was no need to return to him. Told me to go look up burning tongue on internet and see what others did for it. I tried Burnical herbal supposed CURE from Finland for 45 days, saw just a little difference. I find little very relief from Biotene mouthwash, use it all day long. Also chew lots of gum, constantly drink water. Never had chemo or radiation. I take BP meds, 1 diuretic for BP, & celebrex. There is another herbal from Australia for burning mouth I was thinking of trying (90 days). My dentist was no help. I want it to go away permanently. My mouth is not dry ALL the time, but sometimes my tongue sticks to roof of mouth, drives me crazy. Tip of tongue burns most of time. Any suggestions? Know anything about this ailment? If you can’t help, know anyone who might? Thanks a bunch.

A. I am sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation.  I know that burning tongue and dry mouth syndrome are real problems. These are complex issues with multiple unknown etiologies that are still not understood.  I do not know enough about these issues to offer any specific advice.  I would recommend you continue your search but cannot offer much help.  Dr. Lemongello

What would be the best procedure for fixing my severely overcrowded teeth?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. Hi Doctors’ I’ve been dealing with a huge problem with my teeth for the last 20 or so years. I have horrible crowding, making my two eye teeth stick out. Almost making me look like a vampire. I’m almost 30 years old and this is such an emotionally painful subject for me, goind through life not ever really wanting to smile or laugh isn’t fun. What would be the best procedure for this and do cosmetic dentists ever do pro bono work?

A.

Orthodontic treatment would be a good first option to consult with a dentist about.  You can then get an idea of what treatment is possible.  Dr. Lemongello

I have just recovered from throat cancer and my teeth are ruined, what can I do?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. I’ve just recovered from throat cancer. The cancer has absolutely ruined my teeth, every single one has decayed and some have even fallen out. What do you think would be the best option for me in regards to my teeth? A full mouth makeover perhaps? If this is the case how much should I expect to pay? thank you, Brian.

A. I am sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation.  I would consult with both an oral surgeon to discuss removing your teeth and with a dentist to discuss option to restore your teeth to health.  Cost will vary greatly based on the options available.  Dr. Lemongello

I have periodontal disease, what can I do if all of my teeth fall out?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. I have just been diagnosed with periodontal disease and have been told that my teeth may fall out. I’m really worried about this and currently seeing a hygienist. If my teeth were to fall out what would my options be? I would like something to replace the missing teeth as soon as possible. Thank you for your time.

A. I recommend you focus on trying to save your teeth by treating the disease. You may wish to consult with a Periodontist (gum specialist) to review your treatment options. There are many options available so you will not go without teeth. Once the disease is under control you can discuss the next step with your dentist. Dr. Lemongello

Would I have to undergo orthodontic treatment or surgery in regards to my strange smile?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Q. Hi my teeth are quite strange and i was wondering how i would go about getting them fixed, i need to know if it would be an orthodontic procedure or i’d have to undergo surgery. My teeth at the front are all perfectly in-line but as you get towards the back they are mishaped and pushed back. When i smile you can see all of my gums at the back and it looks really silly. What can I do about this?

A. Start by consulting with a dentist and an orthodontist to explain and review your options.  You should get a pretty good perspective of what is possible.  Dr. Lemongello

I am seeking a permanent solution to replace my partial denture, what do you suggest?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Q. I am a forty-three year old healthy female. I am congenitally missing my (#24 and #25) permanent left and right mandibular central incisors, as well as, a few other teeth in the back of my mouth. After my primary mandibular central incisors fell out, I never developed the permanent teeth. The space where the permanent teeth belonged lessoned over the years and became nearly unnoticeable. Esthetically, it didn’t look that bad. My teeth originally were not crowded on top; however, I have been told that due the the malocclusion caused by the missing lower teeth, my upper incisors (left and right of center) became crooked. At the age of thirty-one, I decided to get braces to straighten my uppers to gain a more attractive smile. My doctor explained that I would need to have a full set of braces due to the malocclusion. He closed the slight gap that remained in the bottom front which resulted in a very restricted and uncomfortable bite. Due to that result, he fitted me with an expander. After two expanders, I now have an opening large enough to accompany two slightly smaller than normal teeth. The goal was to get implants to replace the missing teeth. Unfortunately, once I was out of my braces, my nightmare began. The periodontist said that I am not a candidate for implants. The only option is a bridge. At the time, my dentist didn’t like that option for me because he would need to use the two teeth on either side for he bridge to gain enough stability. Since they are healthy, he suggested waiting in the hopes that technology would advance enough to give me more options. I was fitted for a partial denture instead. I have had my partial for approximately ten years now. My dentist, periodontist, and oral surgeon all say that I have healthy teeth. I have experienced extreme recession of the gum tissue and bone loss in that area since I got out of my braces. I have had thr

ee periodontist tell me that I am not a candidate for implants or bone or gum grafting. I am seeking a more permanent solution to replace my partial denture. Last week, the periodontist that I saw strongly suggested a Maryland Bridge. Are there any other options available to me that I should check into? Do you feel that a Maryland Bridge is a better solution for me over replacing my current partial denture? Thank you.

A. A well designed wing retained bonded bridge may be a good option.  I would recommend a bonded bridge made of ceramic material rather than traditional metal wings used in a Maryland bridge.  Good luck.  Dr. Lemongello

Are white fillings better than the amalgam ones?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Q. Hi, this is just a quick question regarding white fillings. Firstly are they better than the amalgam fillings, overall? Are they more expensive and can I get them through the NHS in the UK do you know?? The amalgam ones are very unsightly.

A.

Done properly they are better.  They are generally slightly more expensive.  I do not know if they are available through the NHS.  Consult with a dentist to find out.  However, even if they are not available through the NHS you can still have them instead of the unsightly silver ones.  The best care is your choice.  Dr. Lemongello

Do you have any idea why my teeth are decaying?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Q. Hello, i have had a white coloured substance on my tongue now for some time, it doesn’t bother me but since having it i’ve had really bad breath and my back teeth are decaying. I’m due to see my dentist but do you have any idea what this could be and why it’s happening?? thank you

A.

It could be something as simple as trauma caused from rubbing against the decayed teeth.  Decayed teeth can be a source of bad breath.  Have your dentist examine this.  See your dentist as soon as possible.  Dr. Lemongello
