Tooth sensitivity caused by filled cavities?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011
Q.
Hi! I went in 7 months ago and got 11 cavities filled. The dentist stated that none of them were very deep and it was a fairly simple procedure. Now 7 months later I am still having extreme hot, cold, sweet and pressure sensitivity. I have gone back to the dentist several times to express my concern with the sensitivity and basically he states that he doesn’t know why they are still sensitive. I have used sensodine toothpaste for over a year now and i use a bite guard at night because every now and then I grind my teeth. What else can I do, im tired of having to take pain meds before i eat and im tired of the pain.
A.
It is unfortunate that you still have sensitivity. After 7 months it should subside if it is going to. See if you can identify which teeth are sensitive, maybe it isn’t all of them, and speak to your dentist about re-treating these. Your symptoms are consistent with a poor or incomplete bond of the material to the inside ‘dentin’ layer of the tooth. If the dentist is unwilling to do this or re-treats them and the symptoms continue I would seek another opinion.

What dental treatment is available for TMJ?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011
Q.
I have had a problem for the last couple of months where my jaw keeps popping. I left it in mere hope that it would go away but it didn’t. Now my jaw has locked and I am only able to open it marginally and I get pain when I try to do so. I am concerned that I may have TMJ, and woould appreciate your opinion on this. If it is the case that I have this problem then can you please advise on what I should next do? What kind of treatment is available?
A.
Unfortunately you are experiencing a problem with your TMJ joint. Most likely the joint is now dislocated and the cartilage in the joint is trapped forward restricting the opening of your mouth causing pain. You need to seek treatment from a specialist in TMJ dysfunction. Do research in your area for someone who is trained to treat this situation. Other dental specialists like Oral surgeons may be able to provide a referral to a joint specialist if they do not treat your situation. Dr. lemongello

What is the average cost of porcelain veneers?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
About two years ago now I get two dental veneers for my two front teeth. They were crooked and I did not want to go with braces. Anyhow, now one of them has broken off with a bit still visbile on my real tooth. I guess my only option is to get a replacement and that it is too far gone after initial treatment for it to be given free. Would you be able to give me an estimate for a dental veneer as I expect the prices have changed somewhat since I had them done?
A.
Unfortunately the fee for a veneer varies greatly depending on where you live and if a qualified doctor is performing the treatment. You would need to do research in your area to find out. The fee has not changed significantly for porcelain veneers over the last few years so the fee may be similar to what you paid the first time or a little higher. Dr. Lemongello

What treatment is available for TMJ?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
I was recently diagnosed with TMJ, and find at times that my jaws just lock up and it is hard dame work to get them open again. Is there not some kind of treatment or dental procedure that can help to alleviate this condition, or is it something that will only get better with time?
A.
This situation may improve slightly on its own over time as your joint accommodates the dislocated position of the joint cartilage but it also may get worse. There may be treatment to improve this but you need to seek treatment from a specialist in TMJ dysfunction. Do research in your area for someone who is trained to treat this situation. Other dental specialists like Oral surgeons may be able to provide a referral to a joint specialist if they do not treat your situation.

Should the dentist give oral cancer screening?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
When I go for regular dental appointments should the dentist look out for signs of oral cancer? What do they do to check this? Is only keeping good oral hygiene the only thing you can to prevent this condition from developing?
A.
The dentist and or the dental hygienist should be completing some form of cancer screening examination yearly. You may not realize they are doing this examination if it is part of the routine examination. If you are unsure, ask your dentist to perform a cancer screening examination for you at least yearly during your regular check up. Oral hygiene has little effect on this but avoid tobacco and alcohol and take care of your overall health.

Is teeth shaving safe?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
Is the teeth shaving procedure as part of invisalign to make space safe? will it not damage tooth enamel by shaving away at the teeth?
A.
This procedure is safe and will not damage the teeth. Slenderizing of teeth has been a common practice in orthodontic treatment for many years without complication. Dr. Lemongello

At what age do wisdom teeth come through?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
I am now into my thirties but my wisdom teeth have not come through and there does not seem to be any sign that they will. Is it the case that just some people dont have them or will I eventually get them? I guess they dont really serve a purpose.
A.
The presence of wisdom teeth is unpredictable. Some people have them some don’t. If they have not come in by age 30 they probably won’t. only way to find out if you have them is with an x-ray to see if they are there. If you haven’t had any problems so far you probably won’t have any in the future.

At what age should you start your child cleaning their teeth?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
At what age should you start your child cleaning their teeth?
A.
At home you should start cleaning their teeth a soon as they come in. Usually we recommend they start seeing a dentist around age 2 ½ to 3 years old unless you suspect a problem then any age is appropriate to make sure nothing is wrong.

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
I found what I thought was a cut inside my mouth a few days ago but after researching on the internet I am pretty sure that it is a mouth ulcer. Do dentists offer any treatment for this or is there any medication that I should be taking?
A.
There really is not any treatment for this type of ulcer. They will usually resolve in a week to 10 days. If it doesn’t, consult with your dentist.

Is smoking the cause of bleeding gums noticed at the dentist?

Monday, June 20th, 2011
Q.
I went for a routine check up yesterday, cleaning and what not, and my dentist asked if i had been doing anything different when cleaning my teeth. I said no, but she told me that there was slight irritation from the cleaning with my lower gums and a bit of blood and that this does not normally happen with me. I did lie a bit though as there has been occasion when I have not cleaned my teeth after eating garbage before going to bed. I would say once every two weeks, and also smoking maybe once four times every two weeks. Could this be the cause? I am going to make sure I don’t leav it at night anyhow but would appreciate your answer.
A.
It is important to maintain your hygiene. It is not a good idea to each junk food and go to bed without brushing. Smoking is also not good for gum health so between these two it may be the cause of the changes seen by your dentist. Get back to a healthy routine and you should be fine.
