How do you fix protruding teeth?

I am now into my late 20s and have a problem where my front teeth slightly protrude. Are braces able to fix this easily enough, or is another treatment a better option? Hope to hear from you soon.
A.
Braces are an option for most alignment issues. Treatment time can be lengthy and wearing braces can be uncomfortable. Porcelain veneers are also an option, and can be done in just a few appointments. A porcelain veneer is a thin porcelain covering on the face of the tooth that can change the shape, position and color of a tooth.

Is there an alternative to braces to fix my crooked front teeth?

I have what I would consider as relatively good teeth, though I do have a problem with my two front teeth being slightly crooked. I would like to get this treated, but do not like the idea of braces. Would you be able to advise me on an effective yet cheap method to get this done?
A.

The teeth could be re-aligned by placing porcelain veneers on the face of the teeth. This is done by removing the portion of the tooth that is protruding and replacing the face of the tooth with a porcelain covering. You may need to treat more than just the two teeth to achieve balance in your smile design.

How long does the teeth whitening process take? Is it just one appointment and it is done, or does it take a few to get the procedure completed properly?
A.
It depends on the outcome you wish to achieve. Most of the time, in-office whitening is done in just one appointment. Some patients who wish to be brighter after the initial whitening session may elect to repeat the procedure.

What options are there for children who suffer from dental phobia?

Hello Dr Kirtley. I am writing in relation to my 11 year old daughter, who is what you would call dental phobic. We changed dentists lately in the hope that the new dentist would be able to cater for her needs more, but he recently more or less called her a baby when she was getting upset. Needless to say, I told him what I thought of him and now looking for another dentist. Me and my husband have tried counselling but is has not worked. She just gets so worked up when it comes to the dentist. Can you please offer my any advice?
A.
I would suggest that you take her to a pediadontist, a dentist who is specialized in treating children.  She may need to be sedated for her visits, which can consist of a medication taken prior to her visit, or with in-office sedation administered by the dentist. Many times, after several visits without any upset to the patient, she may learn that she can go through an appointment without any sedation at all.

Should I have gum contouring or teeth whitening done first?

I am looking into gum contouring, but am also wanting to get my teeth whitened. I hate the way my teeth look as there is far too much gum covering them. Would you advise to get teeth whitening done before of after the gum contouring procedure?
A.
I would recommend having gum contouring done first, and then bleaching afterward.

Are veneers or braces best for straight teeth?

I have never been all that happy with my teeth. They are not all that straight and I hate the look of them. I am looking into braces and veneers. Veneers becuase it seems like a quick procedure, but I also feel that it would be nice to have my teeth being completely natural. Would you have an opinion on such a matter, or is it down to individual cases?
A.
The choice comes down to this: once straightened, are you going to like the appearance of your teeth?  Orthodontics can straighten alignment, but if the shape, size, or color of each individual tooth is not esthetically pleasing, you may still be unhappy with the appearance.  I would suggest that you find a dentist who can offer a cosmetic imaging simulation through Envision A Smile software that can show your face with a newly designed smile before treatment is started.  This will help you decide.

Is it a simple procedure to replace silver fillings with white ones?

Is it a simple procedure to have silver fillings replaced with the white type, whatever they may be? I want to do this as I hate seeing the silver fillings when I sometimes look in the mirror, and I can only imagine that other people are seeing the same thing.
A.
Yes, it is a simple procedure to have the mercury-containing metal fillings removed and replaced with composite, or white fillings.  It should take no longer than placing a composite filling in the first place.

Should I worry that gums have not properly healed after tooth extraction?

I had my wisdom teeth extracted a week ago under sedation. One has healed fine but the other is causing me great pain. It does not seem to have healed properly, and the painkillers are doing little to alleviate it. Should I see my dentist to be sure it is nothing too serious?
A.
Yes, you should see your dentist right away. You could be experiencing complications in the healing process that may require treatment to correct.

What are the treatment options for bruxism?

What are the treatment options for bruxism? Are there any natural remedies?
A.
I am not aware of any natural remedies for bruxism. Bruxism, or clenching is usually treated with an occlusal guard, which is a mouth piece that protects your teeth from wear. Your dentist will tell you how long and how often you will need to wear it. Sometimes a patient only clenches or grinds their teeth at night so it may be worn only during sleep.
