Are injections the only option when adminstering anaesthetic?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I am not a fan of the dentist by any means, but have seen special services offered by dentists by way of anaesthetic. I don’t like injections and was wondering if there are any other options to people who have some fear toward the dentist?
A.
Hi, if you’re in fear of the dentist, there are many ways to improve your anxiety, you could have medication to help calm the nerves such as diazepam or intravenous sedation such as midazolam.

There are special injection systems called the wand which helps adminster the anaesthetic slowly so to make it less uncomfortable. there is also topical anaesthetic to help make the injection site numb before adminstrating the injection.

The main thing is to try to find a dentist that you trust and can build up a relationship with.

Hope this is helpful.

What will happen when crown is at the end of it’s life span?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I have been told that my crown will not last more than about five more years. This causes several images of what will happen to go through my mind. What will actually happen? Will it just fall out?
A.

Allow your dentist to monitor the situation. Be proactive. When your dentist tells you it is time to treat it, even if it is a little before its time, do it then, before it becomes a bigger problem. You wouldn’t wait until your tire blew out before you changed it, don’t wait for your tooth to break either.

Can the chlorine contained in swimming pools damage your teeth?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I have started going swimming about 3-4 times a week, but have read that the chlorine contained in the pool may cause erosion to the teeth? I try my best to keep from allowing the water into my mouth, but would still like this matter to be cleared up. It does sound a bit over the top, but there you go.
A.
I don’t think you have to worry about the chlorine hurting your teeth.

Is it important to clean the tongue as part of your dental hygiene routine?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I have read that it is a good idea to not only clean your teeth & gums, but also your tongue. I have seen there are tongue scrapers available, but have also noticed some toothrbrushes which have a bit on the back of the thistle head. Are these sufficient, or should I get some proper tongue cleaners?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email, yes it is correct you should brush or clean your tongue as well as the teeth and gums, whether it’s a tongue scraper or the thistle on the back of the brush, as long as it feels clean and any residue is removed. Hope this is helpful.

What can I do to stop grinding my teeth at night?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I have begun to grind my teeth in the night and am worried thia my lead to damaging of my teeth. I think it is due to stress, due to problems at work at the moment. Is there anything I can do to stop it, or even lessen the damage it causes?
A.
Hi many thanks for your email, the very easy solution would be to ask your dentist to make you a soft night guard, which is a gum shield you wear at night in your sleep, so if you do grind, you grind that away as apposed to your teeth.

Hope this is helpful.

Could my toothache be an indication of underlying problems?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I had toothache for about two weeks but it now seems to have gone. It was not too painful but was noticeable. Is this just something that happens on occassion, or could there be an underlying problem?
A.

This could be an indication of an underlying problem. I would recommend you see your dentist to have it checked. Dr. Lemongello

My bite is misaligned after wearing braces, will this change over time?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
Its been about 3 years since I have had my braces completely off. During my treatment I had to use an expander due to the fact that I had type III Malocclusion. Ever since I’ve had my braces off however, I’ve been left with this open bite on the right side of my mouth that doesn’t seem to be closing. I want to know, will this close naturally or will I have to seek more orthodontic treatment for my bite to level out? The open side of my bite really makes my mouth look asymmetrical and affects the symmetry of my whole face, a problem I never had before braces.
A.
Unfortunately this will not correct itself on its own. You can consider additional orthodontic treatment but perhaps a restorative option would be a better depending on your needs. If you visit our website smile gallery at www.lernerlemongello.com, there is a case of an African American man with a class III anterior open bite. Also, under the media section I published an article on restoring a class III malocclusion with a restorative option. This type of treatment is very different than orthodontics and you would need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of treatment. Consult with your orthodontist for orthodontic treatment but you would need to consult with a highly trained restorative dentist if the restorative option is considered. Dr. Lemongello

What braces would you recommend to fix my son’’s crooked teeth?

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011
Q.
hello

i have a thirteetn year old boy with crooked teeth and was wondering about the best braces for him. I want to get him something discreet and i really like the idea of invisalign but i have also seen that there is an invisalign teen and was wondering what the difference is between these two models. would this be more suitable for my son? he has all of his adult teeth and doesn’t have any rotten teeth or nothing so would you think that would be the best treatment and how is it different from normal invisalign?

thank you for help doctor and warm regards

A.
Hello and regards for taking the time to ask your question. Invisalign and Invisalign teen are essentially the same if all the adult teeth are erupted. Consult with a dentist to advise you on what is the best orthodontic treatment for your son. I hope this is of assistance to you and your son. Dr. Lemongello

Is it safe for a child to use fluoride toothpaste?

Thursday, July 14th, 2011
Q.
I have read that children of a certain age should not use toothpaste which contains fluoride. Is there any truth to this?
A.

What you want to avoid is a young child eating the toothpaste or abusing the amount ingested.  The use of toothpaste and fluoride is safe.

What food shouldn’t you eat after getting an implant?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
Can you give any advice on the kind of diet you should have for the week or so after getting dental implants?
A.

You should avoid anything too spicy or acidic. Also, avoid anything too hard or crunchy which could traumatize the surgical area. A softer diet is generally best.
