Is it necessary to make an opening in my permanent dental crown in order to perform a root canal?

Thursday, January 17th, 2013
Q.
Hello I recently had a permanent crown fitted after having a temporary crown for 18 months whilst I was wearing braces, towards the end of my brace wearing this tooth was sensitive to cold and sweet things and had a smell coming from it when I was flossing. I told my dentist this before he was putting on permanent crown but he said all was ok and put permanent crown on which was a emax crown and very expensive! since then (4 weeks) the tooth is still sensitive and if I eat on it with hardish food its triggers toothache, he is reluctant to give me root canal and is sure it will settle in time but i am having episodes of a dull toothache and just dont know what to do, he also wants to drill through my new crown if I decide to get the root canal, I would appreciate your thoughts of this situation as I am losing trust in my dentist
A.
Unfortunately this does occur sometimes with teeth. Teeth can be unpredictable. Your doctor is trying to be conservative and wants to give the tooth a chance to see if it will get better. Continue to discuss with your doctor what is happening. If you do need a root canal it is common to make a small opening in the crown to treat it. Once complete the doctor can seal the oeping closed without complication and the Emax crown will be fine. Dr. Lemongello

What would be the easiest and least expensive way of fixing shifted teeth?

Monday, March 5th, 2012
Q.
I’m in my forties and would like to know of the best options for my current situation…I have a missing moler tooth on my bottom right which was pulled out in my twenties. Having this gap in my bottom teeth has made them go crowded they have also shifted. Now my top teeth are starting to shift and i have crowns on my two front teeth due to knocking them out at the age of ten. what would be my easiest and less expensive why to fixing them if you can possibly answer?
A.
Often the best option is not the least expensive. You describe 2 problems in your question. In your case the only option for your front teeth is to replace the crowns with new ones if you are unhappy with them. Regarding your missing tooth, the best treatment is braces to return the teeth to the proper position, then replace the missing tooth with a dental implant and crown. Dr. Lemongello

I’ve had a crown for the last 10 years and now I can see a black line at the gum, why is this?

Monday, September 26th, 2011
Q.
I had a crown for my front tooth about 10 years ago and have recently noticed a black line appearing at the top of my gums. Should I be worried about this and is there anything that I can do to stop this from worsening or even get it sorted. Feel really uncomfortable having an ugly black line, which you can see when I smile.

Thanks

A.
This is due to some minor gum recession over time which is normal as we age. The “black line” is the exposure of the underlying metal edge of the crown. This does not mean there is anything wrong with the crown just that it is no longer as esthetic as it used to be. The only treatment is a new crown without this type of material so even if there is additional recession in the future this unsightly appearance won’t reoccur. If you visit our website at www.lernerlemongello.com you will see many examples of crowns made without this type of material that look very natural. Dr. Lemongello

What will happen when crown is at the end of it’s life span?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
Q.
I have been told that my crown will not last more than about five more years. This causes several images of what will happen to go through my mind. What will actually happen? Will it just fall out?
A.

Allow your dentist to monitor the situation. Be proactive. When your dentist tells you it is time to treat it, even if it is a little before its time, do it then, before it becomes a bigger problem. You wouldn’t wait until your tire blew out before you changed it, don’t wait for your tooth to break either.

Can you whiten the colour of crowns?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.
I was given four crowns to replace some missing teeth but have noticed that they have got slightly discoloured. Is it possible to get the colour of these brightened to that of my normal teeth without the need to get new ones altogether?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. Unfortunately crowns can not be whitened so the only option would be to have them redone. Hope this is helpful.

Thursday, June 30th, 2011
Q.
While playing rugby I managed to hurt and damage one of my front teeth. The dentist has told me that I will need to have it removed and get an implant. Would you please be able to give me an estimate of how much this would all cost. Thank you in advance.
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The average cost for a single tooth dental implant including crown ranges from £2000 – £3000. Hope this is helpful.

What options are there to improve the colour of a dental crown?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011
Q.
I have a crown at the side of my upper teeth. It’s colour is now quite discoloured compared to my real teeth. I would like to know what my options are to improve its colour. Will I have to get another crown or can the colour of it be improved?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. Unfortunately, you can not change the colour of a crown, so the only option to improve the colour would be to replace the crown.

My dental crown fell out – what should I do?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
Three days ago I got a dental crown, but, for some unexplained reason, the crown has fallen out. The earliest appointment I could get at the dentist is early monday, but what can I do in the mean time to make sure my remaining tooth is not getting damaged? Should I be more careful when brushing my teeth?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. It is unusual for a crown to fall out so early after it has been fitted. If the crown can go directly back onto the tooth, you can purchase some temporary cement from an pharmacy and tempoariily recement it. Alternatively, my advice would be to brush it softly and stick to a soft diet till monday.

How long after gum contouring can temporary crown be adjusted?

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011
Q.
How long do you need to wait to reline/adjust the temporary crown after gingivoplasty or gum contouring. A laser was probably used on my canine tooth as the tissue appeared charred after the surgery. Once the tissue is removed, can it still grow back?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. The temporary crown can be adjusted around 2 weeks after the first gum contouring and then generally 2 weekly after that if needed. The gum can grow back if the underlying bone is not adjusted accordingly or the crown is not adjusted correctly.

Many thanks,

Dr Kailesh Solanki

Is mouthwash okay with crowns and bridges?

Monday, June 27th, 2011
Q.
Are mouthwashes completly fine to use with dental appliances like bridges, crowns and others? I have a crown, and want to make sure that I do not hurt its structure or its aesthetic appearrance.
A.
hi many thanks for your email, as far as i am aware the only mouthwash which may stain the teeth is corsodyl, but as long as you use a daily mouthwash such as listerine it is fine and will actually help maintain your bridge and crown work.
