I have broken teeth but want to get them whitened, what do you suggest?

Friday, February 25th, 2011
Q.
My teeth are very badly stained but they also contain a lot of chips and some of my teeth are broken at the back. I really want them whitened more than anything because you can’t see the chips/broken teeth cos they’re at the back, can ihave them whitened in this condition? can’t really afford to have them fixed properly just yet you see.
A.
I understand your desire to have white teeth but healthy teeth, especially back teeth are more important than white teeth. If you have cavities or broken teeth you may not be a candidate for whitening. Consult with a dentist on the health of your teeth and if whitening is possible with your situation.

How much would it cost for a smile makeover?

Friday, February 25th, 2011
Q.
i’m in desperate need for a smile makeover, my smile is just awful it really is! I have missing teeth and the ones i do have are discoloured. my teeth at the back of my mouth are all broken and look black, how much would it cosr for a smile makeover? i’m willing to pay anything!
A.
It is not a question that it can be done, it is simply how.  The most appropriate way to go about this is to research a qualified esthetic dentist.  If you are in the UK, you can go on to the cosmetic dentist website.  If you are in the US, you can evaluate a multitde of qualified esthetic dentists.  My location is in Indianapolis, Indiana.  If you research the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry website you can get a listing of the Accredited Dentists.

Costs will vary, but be encouraged that you can have the smile of your dreams…..

My dentist removed my bridge and then broke my tooth! Please help!

Friday, February 25th, 2011
Q.
My dentist was removing my bridge and broke the tooth that was next to the bridge. He said that “there was obviously something wrong with it to break off at the gumline”. He was really tugging and when the tooth cracked, he was yanking on my bridge like he was opening a can of soda. Wouldn’t the xray show that there was something wrong with the tooth. It is now going to cost me over $2,000 more that the original quoted price. Now the bringe is going to be a 5 tooth span bridge. Won’t a bridge that long be weak? Please help.
A.
Maybe a better consideration here would be implants.  I would strongly suggest this as an alternative.  It may cost more but the predictability long term is much greater.

I’ve chipped one of my front teeth, what can I do to get this fixed?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011
Q.
Hello, i’ve chipped my front teeth but it’s sort of in one of the gaps of the teeth, it was from eating something and it got caught between my teeth then chipped it somehow. Anyway, i was wondering what can i do to fix this? will it have to be extracted or can it be filled? Thanks
A.
It sounds as if it is small enough to repair.  A dentist would remove a tooth only as a last resort if it couldn’t be saved.  Consult with a dentist regarding your options.  Dr. Lemongello

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.
Hi there, i chipped my teeth recently (both of my front teeth) it was in a skateboarding accident anyway they look okay but they’re really painful at the moment and turning a funny color i have a bit of a fear of the dentist so what do you think i should do??
A.
See a dentist!!!!! you have likely traumatized them to the point that the nerve of the tooth has been affected.

Are white fillings permanent, in comparison to amalgam fillings?

Monday, February 21st, 2011
Q.
I had two fillings placed a long time ago and now one of them is falling out in bits, it was an amalgam filling and I believed that it was going to be permanent, I was just wondering if the white fillings are believed to be permanent? I don’t want to have to keep replacing them,
A.
Like everything else in life nothing lasts forever.  All dental restorations have a life expectancy and will need to be replaced sometime in the future.  Your natural tooth is a permanent tooth but even it didn’t last forever.  The goal is to choice the best material for the situation that will provide the longest service.  Dr. Lemongello

What is the best treatment option for a fractured tooth?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.
I am fifty two years old and have been one to always take proper care of my teeth and gums. But over the years I have had to get treatment for a problem with gum recession. Now when I went to the dentist earlier this week the dentist identified what I had at first thought a cracked filling to be a fractured tooth. It is my top teeth and close to the back, but my smile is quite big so if I allow myself to smile (not sure I will now!) the state of it will show. The options the dentist discussed with me were not very helpful, it was more a job of me nodding along oblivious to what he was talking about. But in your opinion can you tell me if a bridge or crown or even implant would be the better option? Any useful details on cost and treatment time would also be greatly appreciated. Happy holidays!
A.
If the tooth is not restorable and has to be removed, then an Implant would be the best consideration.  If you choose a bridge you would have to involve the teeth adjacent to the tooth that would be removed. It is always nice to avoid that if possible.  Implant placement is more costly but, I believe to be your best option in most cases like this.
