Q. Hello, i’m really worried about the state of my teeth and because they’re in such a bad way my gums are starting to bleed, i have constant mouth ulcers and bits of my teeth are falling out. Trouble is i’m petrified of the dentist and can’t bring myself to go to get my teeth sorted, please help me i don’t know what to do.

Is CEREC more expensive than conventional methods?

I have dental phobia and my teeth are rotten, please help!

Q. Hi, my top set of teeth are mostly rotted and the upper gums bleed too, my bottom teeth seem okay but i’m terrifeid to go to a dentist but i obviously need to. Do you think my dentist would extract all of my rotten teeth? If he does can I have dental implants as I feel I have severe gum disease so the bone might not be strong enough to hold them in. What should i do? please help!

I recommend you consult with a dentist before your condition gets worse. A qualified dentist working with a specialist should be able to manage your care of removing the decayed teeth and providing you with implants or any other type of dentistry you may need. Just because you have gum disease around the decayed teeth doesn’t mean you are not a candidate for implants. I have broken teeth but want to get them whitened, what do you suggest?

Q. My teeth are very badly stained but they also contain a lot of chips and some of my teeth are broken at the back. I really want them whitened more than anything because you can’t see the chips/broken teeth cos they’re at the back, can ihave them whitened in this condition? can’t really afford to have them fixed properly just yet you see.

A. I understand your desire to have white teeth but healthy teeth, especially back teeth are more important than white teeth. If you have cavities or broken teeth you may not be a candidate for whitening. Consult with a dentist on the health of your teeth and if whitening is possible with your situation.

My tooth is cracked, should I get it checked out?

Q. if a tooth is cracked does this automatically mean that you should get it checked out at the dentist and seek treatment. this weekend gone i fell on my face when skateboarding and my tooth looks cracked. there is a chipped bit on it as well. but it doesn;’t hurt so that is making me think i dont need to get any treatment but what would your opinion be please?

A. Definitely get it evaluated…you may be able to prevent more serious problems if you do.

What can be done about bulimia that is decaying my teeth?

Q. A couple ofmy teeth have been chipped in the past few months and I am concerned that it may be down to a case of bulimia. Can you advise on any treatment that can help with this prioblem. It is really worrying me.

A. Most important is to seek treatment for your Bulimia. This can be devastating to your health. Regarding your teeth make sure you are rinsing your mouth out with water as often as possible during any vomiting episodes. It is important to neutralize the acid as much as possible. Do not brush your teeth vigorously with tooth paste, this could be too abrasive in combination with the acid environment and cause additional erosion. Should I be concerned that my babies tooth fell out?

Q. My 14 months old baby/child managed to fall flat on her face and not crack but lose completely one of her front teeth. I am concerned that she will now not have any tooth there until her permanent teeth come through, which is years and years away. Should I go to the dentist to have her checked over or is she too young for this?

A. This should not be a problem. Sometimes the eruption sequence of the permanent teeth may be affected. You may want to consult a Pediatric dentist just to make sure there are no problems. Most likely, she will be without a front tooth until the permanent tooth comes in.

Can I replace silver fillings with more discreet ones?

Q. When I was younger I had to have many of those horrible silver looking fillings. Now, I am sick and tired of seeing them when I look in the mirror with my mouth open. Can I get them replaced with the newer better looking ones or are you not allowed to until the other ones have come to their end?

A. You can have these silver fillings replaced any time you decide to. If they are that old you may be surprised to find out that some of them have decay underneath but you don’t know it! You may be happy to have them removed.

Provisional option for lost central incisor?

Hi Doctor, I Have a sixteen year old patient who lost his central incisor due to trauma so i need to give a provisional bridge something like a resin maryland bridge(composite wings instead of metal wings).. so needed to know the way of fabrication if it was possible to make it in the clinic. Thank you

A. hi many thanks you could just build the whole area up with composite including the wing areas. it may not last forever but with a good bonding technique i think it would be a good provisional option. hope this is helpful.
