Will dental crown prevent me from having MRI scan?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Q. Does a dental crown contain any metal elements that may prohibit me getting an MRI scan? I need to get the scan for a matter that is not related to dentistry in any way as it is my knee but could it still be problematic?

A. Many dental restorations contain metal.  Any metal elements in your mouth will not prohibit you from having an MRI.  Dr. Lemongello

Should I be worried that tooth ache has now transferred to jaw as well?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Q. Recently I have had tooth ache and this seems to have transferred into a slight jaw pain as well. I can’t help but think they are related and that there may be a problem. I have booked in a dentist appointment for next week. Have you any idea what it may be?

A. hi many thanks for your email, if the tooth ache has radiated to the jaw, the first thing that springs to mind is that there may be a infection in a tooth. hope this is helpful.

Are lingual braces a painful option for straightening teeth?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Q. I am contemplating getting lingual braces as I can’t afford the more expensive systems but don’t really want to get braces on my front teeth. Do they hurt a lot considering that they are on the inside of teeth? Cut tongue up and gums?

A. Lingual braces should be very similar in cost as other orthodontic treatment and should not be any more uncomfortable.  If you don’t want braces on your front teeth and you are a candidate for Invisalign you should consider this instead.

Would I be able to get them changed for the better looking modern ones or are they likely to come to thed of their life soon enough anyway?

A. hi many thanks for your email, this is a very common treatment, the silver fillings can be replaced for white ones. hope this is helpful.

Are all fruits high in acidity?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Q. The government tell people to eat five a day of fruit and veg but then I am told that the acidity in fruit eats away at teeth. What can I do to win here? Its like I am going in circles!

A. There are many differnt types of fruits and vegtables. Not all of them are high in acid and sugar. The key is moderation and diversity.

What are mini implants used for?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Q. Are mini implants just another option when it comes to dental implants or do they do a different job entirely and are used for a different purpose when it coems to replacing mssing teeth?

A. No, in my opinion there are very few indications for mini implants. They were originally designed as temporary implants. The only place I would recommend them is to hold in a full lower denture only when finances are a major concern. Conventional implants are significantly better in all situations.

What causes teeth staining?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Q. What are the biggest causes of teeth staining? I don’t smoke and try to stay away from coffee but my teeth are getting a nasty colour to them? What other things may be causing this?

A. hi many thanks for your email, although smoking and coffee and red wine are the main reasons for staining, other things such as food that you eat and drink can cause staining. also the age of your teeth can cause them to look discoloured. staining can be classified as intrinsic(internal) or extrinsic(external). extrinsic staining can be removed by a hygienist visit. intrinsic staining is much harder to remove and things like whitening can help.

Should I avoid smoking when I get dental implants?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Q. I know smoking when getting dental implants is a no no. But what other joyou activities are prohibited during this time?

A. There are few restrictions. Intially, you should aviod smoking, the use of alcohol, and stick to a softer diet to avoid disturbing the implant site. See, you can still do most of your favorite things!

Is dentist wrong in saying there is no cause for tooth ache?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Q. I have been having bad toothache so I went to the dentist. the dentist took some x-rays and examined my teeth but said that he was not sure what was causing the tooth ache. He said my teeth looked to be in good shape and said he could not see ny required treatment to help ease the pain. All he did was recommend painkillers. Not much help really. Do you know of anything else that may be causing this annoying tooth ache?

A. hi many thanks for your email, i think you maybe better trying to seek the advice of a second dentist for a second opinion. hope this is helpful.
