Why does my jaw ache after getting a filling?

Q.
I had a filling put in two days ago which replaced the last one that fell out. This exposed the remaining tooth somewhat until I had the new filling. Now, after getting idt done I am finding that my jaw aches a bit around the area. Is this normal? The tooth feels fine, which is strange. Should I have a check up or will it abate?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. After a filling it can take some time to settle down. My advice would be to give it a week. If things get better then fine, however, if the pain increases in severity or becomes acute go back to consult with your dentist to see what the problem is.

Do many dental clinics offer screening for oral cancer

Q.
Do many dental clinics offer screening for oral cancer?
A.
hi many thanks for your email. it is good practice for all dentists to screen for oral cancers every six months along with your dental examination. this would generally include a full soft tissue examination and gland examination. hope this is helpful.

Are valplast dentures considered one of the best dentures?

Q.
Dear Dr. Solanki: How are you? Are valplast dentures considered top of the line in denture wear and how long do they normally last? Thank you.
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. I would not consider valplast as top of the line. I would say that there is a place from the type of denture in certain clinical circumstances. Accrylic dentures are also good, however, again the clinical situation has to be taken into account before a decision on the type of denture used is made.

Valplast dentures should last around 10 years. The material is very strong. Hope this information is helpful.

Is clicking jaw a sign of problem?

Q.
Last month my jaw started clicking when I open my mouth to eat, speak or even laugh. I am worried there may be a serious problem. There is no pain but the sound is still worrying. Any advice?
A.
What is happening is the cartilage in your jaw joint is beginning to change position when you open and close, creating this sound. A fair amount of our population has a jaw joint that does this and it is not a problem. However, sometimes this can become more serious. I would recommend you see a dentist who understands problems that occur with your jaw joint. Your general dentist may or may not treat this, so you may have to ask or do some research in your area for someone who specializes in TMJ problems. Dr. Lemongello

How long after tooth extraction for gum to heal?

Q.
How long should it take for the area around an extracted tooth to heal properly? It has been two weeks since I had my tooth extracted but it still feels sensitive.
A.
Having a tooth extracted is like breaking your arm. If you break your arm the bone takes approximately 8 weeks to heal in a cast. Your jaw bone is similar and could take up to 8 weeks to heal but generally takes less. Being sensitive after 2 weeks is common. You should call your dentist and let them know in case they want to check it. Dr. Lemongello

Are there any alternatives to tooth extraction for my 70 year old mother?

Q.
My 70 year old mother had root canal treatment but is still suffering from some pain. She suffers from kidney disease and diabetes so this is another unwated burdon. The dentist has said my mother will need to have her tooth removeed. Are there any alternatives to this?
A.
Hi, many thanks for your email. If the root canal treatment has not been sucessful, first you need to assess whether the quality of the root canal is of a good standard. If it is not, you could see a specialist endodontist to try to improve the root canal. If the root canal has been done to a good standard then the only option will be to extract the tooth.

Hope this is helpful.

What is there to help me stop grinding my teeth?

Q.
I have begun to grind my teeth during the day. I know it must be down to stress. It is not like having it at night where you can wear a motuh guard, so what can I do to try and stop this from happening?
A.
You are at least aware that you are grinding. Some people are able to wear a guard during the day. If not, stay aware and try to stop yourself. Perhaps chewing sugarless gum may help.
